Chamberlain Champion
[Previous Pic]  [Main List]  [Next Pic]

This is a Chamberlain Champion tractor, built in Australia, in the late 50's and early 60's.

It had a Perkins 4-270D diesel engine which gave, I think, about 52 hp at the flywheel and about 45 hp at the drawbar. Inside that cab you would find a full width bench seat for TWO people, the driver sitting right over to the right side of the seat. As with all agricultural Chamberlain tractors that I ever saw, it had a transverse leaf spring on the front axle which vastly improved the ride over ploughed fields or other rough ground.

The first model of Champion, the 6G, had a main gearbox with 3 speeds forward and one reverse and a two-speed range gearbox behind it,giving 6 forward gears and two reverse. The second model, the 9G, had a 3-speed range box, giving it 9 forward and 3 reverse gears. Both models had a top road speed of 27 mph. The tractor shown here is a 9G.

One of these tractors, known as 'Tail-end Charlie', went around Australia 1 1/2 times with an around-Australia car arlly that was held each year back in those times. This one had a modified gearbox that gave it a top speed of 50 mph. Its main purpose was, I guess, advertising, but it also towed quite a few broken-down rally cars to the next town as it went.

The cable leading up from the engine to the back of the dash panel is for the tachometer.

As you may notice, the photo comes from Opticrop.com.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
