Before all-hydraulic loaders were perfected, tractor-mounted loaders were operated by cable. Described by poet and author Thomas Merton as a “tractor with a face like a drawbridge,” this was the most widely used cable loader design. The bucket is raised up the track on the front of the machine by a winch above the engine and dumped by yanking on a trip wire on the right side of the machine. To reset the bucket, the operator either lowered it to the ground and backed up or caught it on the edge of the truck body into which he was dumping. This design was very top-heavy and front-heavy, and was offered for Caterpillartractors up to D7s.

This machine can be seen in operation at the 18th annual National Convention and Old Equipment Exposition of the Historical Construction Equipment Association, to be held September 5th through 7th, 2003 at its National Construction Equipment Museum near Bowling Green, Ohio.
