Yesterday's Tractor Company - Antique Tractor Pictures

1946 Farmall H

Since I restored this tractor I made a few improvements. When I bought the tractor I knew it needed valve work so I pulled the head and seen someone had put IH Firecreator pistons in it so I didn't check the head for being a low compression head. The instructions that come with Firecreator pistons sets say that you must have a high compression head when installing the Firecreator pistons so I had the head rebuilt without checking it for being a low compression head. (Over 300. smackers) I could never get the tractor to idle properly and tried rebuilding the carb., a new shaft in the distributor, etc. Finely after I put it on a dynamometer at a tractor show I found it was low on power so I took the valve cover off and checked the casting number on the head and found that the head was a low compression head. I found a head from a Farmall 300 and had it rebuilt (over 300. bills again!) and put it on the H and at the same time I put new rings bearing in the engine. When checking the crank for bearing wear, I found that they had put a Super H or 300 crank in the engine. Now the engine purrrrs like a kitten when it is ideling and has great power.
