garrett sharp wrote on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 (PDT):i was wondering how you remove the starter from the w4 tractor. i have one that needs to be replaced but i seem to not be able to pull it out of is place. all the bolts are removed and it wiggles and slides in and out but i cant tilt it the correct way to get the entire starter to slide out. i was wondering if anyone knew how this needs to be done thank you.

All three of these tractors have been restored and are in excellent working order. He loves these tractors. He is also getting up in age and just had a stroke this last fall. I am helping him find buyers for thes tractors. Me not knowing anything about tractors, is there any websites or auction sites that I can use to find out about buysrs for these gems.

One question I have is that the shift knob is steel and has numbers engraved into it - does anyone know why this tractor doesn t have the rubber knob - or what the numbers designate. thanks

Engine appears to be seized, left rear wheel won t turn and needs a good soda blasting. I now have it half pulled apart and look forward to restoring it. One thing I did find out. These Tractors are not worth much, even when restored. Nonetheless, I look forwaed to my new toy.

Was fortunate to be able to purchase a 1951 W4 last spring, all original, all tin in great shape. With a new battery it starts on the second turn over when cold and on the first turn when warm. Used it to rake 50 acres of hay last year, bringing back lots of memories.

When I got it home my son and I took the bolts out of the belt pully housing slid it back a 1/2 inch and the starter came right off. I put a new spring in the starter installed it and drove the tracter off the trailer.

When the wheel weights are removed from my W4 s they have spokes like the one in the picture. Mine aren t pretty but they earn their keep, all start with the crank. All 4 are badged McCormick, great site.

The tractor had been parked for nine years, and started with new gas and a very short pull. Problem is, the clutch and pressure plate seem to be stuck together.Any hints? With the magneto overhaualled a new back tyre 7 a coat of IH paint & she's like new. My father-in-law bought it new in 1946 & I drove it in the 50s. Ian Curran wrote on Sunday, March 24, 2002 (PST):My Dad has a W-4,Plus a Super W-6 They are both very dependable tractors.They did our farm work for many years and still are used on a regular basearound the farm for the lighter jobs now.We still have most of the drag type imploments to fit them.I would say a 3 furrow McCormick Deering Plow behind a W-6 does a better job plowing then any newer plow out there today!

Ryan wrote on Saturday, September 22, 2001 (PDT):My Grandfather has a 1954 W4. Runs great, needs some paint and there is a couple of dents, but otherwise just as new. We use it just as hard as when he first bought it. It rakes, pulls loads of hay (with a good wagon we can get 220-230 square bales on one load) over large hills quite well for it's condition.

Half of the engine is the air compressor that runs the hole driller.The manufacture plate is missing.I would apprectiate any comments on this type of machine.
