The GP was an entirely new design for Massey-Harris and was first announced in 1930. The four-wheel-drive design was very advanced for the time. It was equipped with a Hercules 4-cylinder 226 CID engine with a rated speed of 1200 RPM.

Just got back from a tractor auction in corsica sd. Ran across a very unique little tractor I have never seen before in my life. It had been previously restored and ran this morning. Shot some pictures so I could do some research and sure enough it is a gp. Year unknown but had rubber tires and a flat head hercules engine. Sold for 14,500. One of the coolest little tractors I have ever seen.

My father now aged 78 remembers starting his carreer on a Massey Harris G.P. crop market, circa 1930, he has never seen one since that time,continues to look round argricultural/vintage rallies/shows. I have a 1930 MH GP. It is grey with red steel wheels. It runs a little rough because it has a AC WD45 carb on it. Cant seem to lean it out enough. The tractor stays running though and looks good. The right brake drum is half broken so it only brakes one direction and that is directlry to the left. The serial number is 301652. Any one know where I can get an OEM Zenith carb for an OOC Hercules? The number is 0-11722 or an original Tilisen carb for the GP? Email me at super_dak2000 at yahoo.com. Thanks!

The MH GP was a wonderful tractor for pulling stumps. Dad cleared his farm. Sometimes it would get stuck in the spring bog here in Indiana. Tie a fence post to the front wheels with a log chain and it would come right out. It also went through fences quite well.

Here at the shop we have just completed painting and assembling a 1930 GP on steel. The engine has been over hauled and the rest of the driveline has been checked and lubed. All that is left is carb and fluids and its ready to fire. At present we know of about half a dozen of these machines here in SE SAskatchewan and SW manitoba; i have not seen them all, but the word is they are complete and running. The last one I saw was in a museum in Elkhorn Manitoba and it was on rubber. The one we done is battleship grey with red wheels, looks sharp we're just waitng for the owner to make noise out of the straight pipe.

There are at least two of the Massey-Harris GP tractors in museums in Colorado. One is at the museum in Montrose [The former Rio Grande R.R. station]. The other is at the Strasburg museum just East of Denver. This one was first owned by Frank Winters and he donated it to the museum. My Grandfather bought a 1930 model brand new in 1931. My father still has the bill of sale for this tractor. It sat in a shed on my uncles farm for 25 years sinking into the dirt floor when my father decided to get it out and clean it up for the upcoming centennial parade. He had a rebuilt mag that had been sitting around for years and found some plugs that weren't in too bad of shape. We dug a hole in the front so we could crank it and crank it we did. I was 15 years old and the time and kept telling dad, "Let's just hook a chain on it and pull it out so we can work on it!" Dad said, "I backed it in here. I'm gonna drive it out!" And sure enough, after a couple of hours of cranking, it fired up and he hopped on it and drove her out into the sunlight for the first time in 25 years. Now, 34 years later, it's been sitting in a shed on the farm I grew up on and has not run for probably 15 years at least. Dad did a lot of work on it and took it to several parades during the 70s and early 80s. It WAS Massy red with gray wheels, but he repainted it the correct "tool gray" after that first centennial parade where he drove it through in all it's dilapidated glory. Wonderful tractor and dad has lots of memories about it. (not all pleasant either!)

Regarding Hercules engines; I owned a '49 Diamond T in the '70s that used a Hercules flathead 6. I got parts (valves, ignition pieces, etc.) for the engine at NAPA. That engine, by the way, was a torque monster! It was about (as I remember) 320 cu.in. and would pull down to almost nothing before you had to downshift.

My dad purchased a used GP on steel at a auction in 1947 for $150.00. It took him 3 full days to drive it home. We used it on our farm in Aitkin MN. We sold it to a lumber mill where it did belt work untill the engine failed. it was scrpped at that time. I have many good memories about this tractor and would like to buy one but good ones are out of my price range.

I'm the third owner of our 1936 MH GP. We use it yearly to compete in plowing matches, along with a MH #26 plow. The steel wheels and V lugs make for tough steering unless you're moving and unfortunately, the years of use have left a lot of play in the steering. In spite of this, we've done quite well in competition, placing in the top 5 for the past 8 or 9 years. Twice, we've won first place. You get used to the play and once the wheels are in the furrow, the tractor doesn't "hunt" nearly as much. My opinion as to why they weren't a commercial success in the Midwest is that they are under-powered for plowing applications. 2-12's in hard black soil are about all it will pull for any length of time. Parts are difficult to find and expensive, if available at all. (I'm currently looking for some drawbar parts and a radiator for the overhead valve engine, if anyone knows of one.) The appearance and uniqueness of this tractor make it a conversation starter anywhere it goes. Most people wonder how it steers and are surprised that it introduced 4 wheel drive way back in 1930. It is a great chance to tell people about some of the other innovations that MH pioneeered.

This was my dad's tractor and when he needed an engine for it, he found the exact same hercules engine on an industrial water pump. Persons looking for engines should look up hercules engine company and find out what other uses they used for this engine. Anyone who has never driven a MH 4WD GP, your in for a surprise! Make sure you have a large open area, steering is hard and can be assisted by breaking separate wheels. The clutch is hand-operated and it will take a while to get used to. This was a great logging tractor. Many great memories with it!

I first learned to drive a tractor at a very young age on my Dad's 1938 "challenger". It was very easy to drive with very easy steering for it's time, and the oil clutch. Wish it hadn't been scraped!
