The Farmall Cub was introduced in 1947 and had the same Culti-Vision feature as the Farmall A. This is the smallest tractor produced in the Farmall line. The most distinguishing feature is the shape of the gas tank which is rounded rather than a tear-drop shape as on the other Farmalls. |

The farmer that owend this tractor wrote on the side loose, last ran 3 years ago, shes a bit rough, she runs like a top! The info I have found in a book says that they made 3,602 of this style tractor. Every tractor we buy has a perment home with the rest of the farmalls,internationals,ac,john deeres,massey,we love the little ones! It appears that there was several things that were in need of repair since it had sat in the barn since 1990 till I was able to rescue it. My DAD had it and was going to sell it. I offered to buy it and he gave it to me. One of the areas that needs attention is the govenor. I have an IT manual and have been reading up on it. I can get the tractor started but there seems to be no power when I attempt to throtle up. I have a 55 Cub as well and it appears that I can throtle up the 55. I am wondering if something has come apart in the governor on the 57. Anyone have a words of wisdom I would like to get the 57 running again. My wife and I own about 6 acres. I have the cultivators on the 55 and plan to use the 57 for the sickle bar mower. Thank you, please help ..... grass is growing

I ve called my mother in NY and asked if she wanted to sell her 2 Cubs she has with the belly mowers and so on. She has given me the go ahead. I do not know the years for them, but they ve both gone through over hauls years back and as of just a couple years ago were mowing lots of grass. She s looking for 1500 for the red one and 1000 for the white and yellow one. She has xtra blades and I believe belts for them. larry lile wrote on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 (PST):dereck i hate to burst your bubble but you are severly misinformed about the strenght of your beloved oliver tractors, while they where a verry serviceable tractor they just will not hold up to the same size john deere for comparrison here i am going to use the data from the Nebraska university test, these where the standard that was used in the years past, and are still being used because it was illegal to sell a tractor in Nebraska that did not meet there advertised hp ratings and which would not submit to the testing. all tractors of the period where tested and they where all supplied by the tractor companies for testing, and i am sure that there where company reps on hand to make sure that their tractors where up to specs during testing, these test are readily available today from various internet sources, so with this in mind let us look at the disel model john deere 730 built from 1958-1961, and the oliver 770 built from 1958-196 , these are both 6000 lb class tractors with six speed tranmissions, and wearing the same size rubber the six cylinder oliver 770 diesel at 216 cubic in, delivered 44.4 hp at the drawbar, pulling a static weight of 4571 lbs in third gear, at a fuel consumption rate of 3.4 gallons per hour, with a last base price of 4345.00 while the two cylinder john deere model 730 diesel at 360 cubic inch, delivered a tested 53.4 hp,at the drawbar pulling a static weight of 5633 lbs in third gear,, at a fuel consumption rate of 3.2 gal per hour, with a last base price of 3700.00 the 720/730 diesels held the hp to fuel consumption record for 26years at the university this translates to the john deere pulling 19% more weight, with 17% more horse power and using 6% less fuel while doing it, that is the primary reason why you still find the old john deeres today and why they outsold all other brands. john deere changed to the new generation tractors in 1961 and they did this only because they had advanced the two cylinder tecnology as far as they thought they could get it to go, but they will always be a classic, while the olivers will always be a also ran like the minnies, both where good tractors, but the john deeres sold so well for a reason!

Currently the tractor is red with the aluminum color trim on back wheel and the equipment is rusty. He passed away about five years ago, and my grandmother is now ready to sell their house and get rid of things. There is a lot of resistance from the battery cable to the starter, so I use a small 12 volt battery like the ones in a lawn tractor and jumper cables positive to ground and negative to the starter then as soon as it starts up, remove the jumper cables I keep the little battery on a battery charger to keep it up, the battery is light in weight and even has a carrying strap, so it s easy to use. Try it , it might help !! Jim B.
Brian wrote on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 (PDT):I have a Farmall Cub. It is about a 1954 I think and has a hydraulic lift system. Lately the hydraulic system leaks into the crankcase. I had the hydraulic pump rebuilt by a shop and they said that there is an O ring seal that had failed. We thought the problem was fixed but now it is back again. If it sits for a long period, the hydraulic fluid all ends up in the crankcase again. I m wondering if I am using the wrong hydraulic oil I topped it up with standard AW 100 from Petro Can. Same stuff I use in my excavator. Possibly it should be a thinner oil Maybe even just engine oil #30 for example but I have no book to tell me what is supposed to be in the system. Does anybody out there know what is supposed to be used Any suggestions appreciated.
John wrote on Monday, May 11, 2009 (PDT):I have a 49 farmall cub. This tractor is in great condition and runs well. I have done tune up, new carb, magneto rebuilt and motor has recently rebuilt. My problem is it is very hard to start. It has a 6 volt starting system and I have to crank it many many times to get it to fire up. After a bunch of tries it drips gas out overflows on carb until it finally starts. Can anyone please help me, I have tried everything I can think of. Thanks for any help.

I have cleaned this carb out and many times and it won t rev up after it is warmed up and running. The tractor is in great shape and had the magneto rebuilt by professionals. After it gets hot it stalls and refuses to start again. Do I need to buy a new carb. and is a rebuilt one going to give me problems again. I just want to ride it around the country roads by my house for fun. Any help will be greatly appreacieated.

A friend of mine attached a belly mower with drive pulleys from the PTO. The cutting deck is a cub cadet 60C194374100. It has been running OK and cutting a 4 acre field, but I need something newer and this baby needs to be cleaned and shown. Anyone interested

The later A had a 321 cu engine and was rated at 950rpm. The 60 had the same basic engine but reduced the cubes to 302.9 and increased the rpms to 1125. In so doing they gained a slight power increase. The model A was very popular and would haul 3-14 plows all day long. I love that old tractor, but the newer 2 banger 620 and 630 s will just flat out-haul it.According to the Nebraska test the 1950 J.D. model A will pull 4394 lbs. The 620 will haul 6122 lbs. The real improvement came with the adoption of the 3 point hitch system. The old 2 bangers were loved by a lot of old timers.

Replaced lots of parts. We think it may be the reverse idler gear. Took it back apart and put a used one in. Put it back together and it still makes the same darn noise. Stops making the noise when you take the gear out and turn it by hand. Just wondering what you all think. Any help appreciated.

I bought mine several years ago with a frozen engine but otherwise in decent shape with three implements for $ 450.00...un-stuck the engine, overhauled it, repainted it and added two new front tires..now runs like a charm and works everyday on my daughter's farm ! Now, if it has a "crank", remove the spark plugs and see if it will turn over, also check condition of the oil in engine, check radiator, watch for leaks, and if all checks out, make him a reasonable offer. They are really very simple machines to work on and a pleasure to restore ! Lots of luck Jim

He rebuit the engine and painted it a month ago and can not find decals like the ones he removed. Jim Broughton wrote on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 (PDT):To; John Weaver John, your Cub is a 1950 model, 6 volt POSITIVE ground electrical system, and no, it won't run without the battery! You can get a service/repair manual from Intertec,P.O. Box12901, Overland Park, Kansas,66282-2901, last one I bought cost about $20.00, but they may have gone up since then. Also, Binder Books in Tigard Oregon has a lot of literature and manuals on them...They are listed on the internet, so should be easy to find. Also, on the generator, ther are two small holes on the right front of your sheet metal, near the radiator...take a small screwdriver and a light hammer or wrench and put the screwdriver in the front hole, feel around for the "cut-out" and give er a whack with the wrench or hammer (not too hard!) with the engine running and if it is the "cut-out or regulator, it should charge, if not, then you gotta check it all out and fix it! Best of luck, the Cub is a dandy little tractor! Jim

Bubba gaylor wrote on Friday, August 19, 2005 (PDT):Just purchased a cub lo boy 184 and I am parting it out I bought it for the engine for my 154 and a few other parts. I am overhauling the engine from the 184 to install in my 154 and the engine for the 154 will be for sale also it still runs okay but smokes through the oil dip stick filler tube. These little tractors seem to stick the oil rings and cause it to vent through the filler tube. If any one is interested in some of the parts contact me and let me know what you have an interest in.

My son brought me one last week and it has no exhaust stack or muffler on it. I am trying to figure out how the muffler or a straight pipe attaches to the manifold. It dont have threads like the Cubs. It is just a smooth I.D. in the 90° elbow that it would fit in/attach to. I just chipped out (cleaned) the I.D. of the elbow of what was a layer of carbon or possibly an epoxy that held a pipe or muffler. Thanks B.J.

Terry Lorenz wrote on Friday, August 05, 2005 (PDT):Had a 901 Selecto high profile with the California wide front end full adjust in out for 22 inch or wider rows, had to rebuild the engine. Did a complete rebuild from crank and bearings new on up. Parts for motor still on market for the 134 cube motor. SOS tranny worked fine on this one, the gas tank was rusted and crapped out so we bought a reconditioned tank that had a liner blown into it and it was as good as a new tank. This one was red and grey but had gold paint on base almost like primer. It also had a Golden Jubilee emblem in the front of the hood. I heard that was 1953 the anniversary for Ford tractor 50 years out. Great tractor to mow,rake,bale,bushhog,cultivate,ditch,it worked nice with the almost automatic tranny and watched the neighbors getting gears and jamming clutches in shift combat. Traded it in last year restored for a 1997 6200 JD with cab and modern features, it was time for us to move out of the 1950,era. Ron's Equipment in Ft. Collins Colorado has parts for all Fords and knows the ropes on them. Good shop for R&R or restorations too. I really liked the slide out PTO lever on the right side of console/dash smooth in and out no clutching!!!!!!!!!!

There are more on a Farmall retirement plan that aren't used daily. WE have a cub, A, C, H, 2 Ms (1 with a picker), 584 overhauled, 4 1066s (3 open station all are white stripes) and a 1466 white cab. There is also a 5088 in the shop that has been in "overhaul" for a few years now. the shop needs to get their butts in gear. These tractors are great, the 1066's can't be beat for their looks, their engines and the Name. I wan't to buy a 10 for myself when I get my place. I only hope that inlcludes some acreage to use her on! ;)

Anyone out there have a junker? Our 550 has the regular red rear rims(non power adjust) and it appears that only early 58's had these as a hold over from the super 55's. It also has the the 144 cube engine which is the same as the super 55's. About 35 HP. It will never be sold since it was my Dad's. We don't use it much but it was fun growing up with it. It also came with Ollie double plows and harrow and also an ollie hay wagon. AGCO would make a fortune if they started making them again. Did I hear Ford is doing a limited run of their old N-series? Jim Broughton wrote on Thursday, January 06, 2005 (PST): Carl; Most likely the "tube" that runs from your oil pump to the presure gauge is stopped up...fairly common on Cubs. You'll have to remove the pan, clean up the pump and "rod-out" that tube..after sitting so long, the old oil "coagulates" and stops up that tube. Aftercleaning and rodding, replace pan gaskets,pan and put in fresh oil..she is probably alright.(Wouldn't hurt to check bearings down there while you have the pan off). Lotsa luck, Jim

Location is Borrego Springs CA 90 miles from LA or San Diego. Her husband bought the basic unit is god offal condition, lots missing, rusted, a real junker. He was an aviation machanic and was used to total restoration. The unit was totall disassembled, every part was bead blasted, primed and repainted. Many parts were bought from all over the US including from IH. He paid $1500 for the junker, spent another $4K to $6K in parts and perhaps >1000 hours. It looks & runs like new, I would bet he rebuilt the engine but not sure, used very little since restore. A real collectors item. QUESTION; What is the best way to sell it and get a fair price? It's a IH Farmall Cub, on the RH side of the the frame is stamped 351686, on the LH side of the motor is stamped 251341R6. The tractor starts and runs just fine, has been well cared for and has no rust. There is no Hydraulic PTO, but it comes with a mower deck, a disc, and cultivator (?). Thanks in advance for any help!

The tractor was actually my dad's. He purchased it as what looked to me like a pile of rust but he put a lot of work and many hours into it and its beautiful now, fully restored. He used to belong to some clubs, showed it at local fairs and drove it in parades. He recently passed away and that is why we are selling it, although it kills us to sell it since he loved it so much. Anyone have any idea how much it might be worth. It has been always stored in a garage. I also have extra rims and tires for the rear of it. It has a 5ft. mower deck and dirt blade. If anyone can offer any info I'd appreciate it, just e-mail me. We really want to see it go to someone who will appreciate it and not park it somewhere outside where it will rust to crap. We would also like to see whoever buys it continue to show it with a sign that was made for it that specifies that my dad restored it (he put so much into it, it would break our hearts to see someone take credit for all his hard work). At first I thought the implements were home built by the way they were constructed, but on a closer look on a little pull behind disc, I found a International decal and a model # plate. I was wondering where I can find information and photos of implements offered for the Cub by IH and maybe other companies. My interest is really on this belly mounted single blade disc. The blade is 26 inches in diameter with a scraper attached to it. Hope to hear from somebody. Thanks, KEN

If I mist it (spray or pour gas into the air intake) it runs fine, I think it may be an air intake leak. I have great fuel flow and have taken the carb apart and cleaned it several times (I have not rebuilt the carb). Everything looks fine but it won't run without "misting" it, if I do it runs great. I just changed the oil and am getting ready to get it fixed but where? I was informed there is a place in Mass around Worcester or Springfield that specializes in Cubs, tune-ups and repairs. I forgot where exactly but think it was called "The Outdoor power shop" or something like that. Anyone out there that could help me locate this shop to work on my Cub or knows of a good knowledgeable shop or person in the New England area to help me? The tractor otherwise is solid and I have several implements and I would love to have it running good again like when I bought it to use it at my camp in Maine...

There are casting #'s on various parts, but there is a data plate on the steering gearbox with a very faded # starting with "117xxx" and the number "1800" just below that. If anyone would know the year I would like to know. Also, I have a spare belly mower if anyone wants to make me an offer. I live in southwest Louisiana. Leonard Rahilly wrote on Saturday, April 10, 2004 (PDT):I spent many happy hours on a cousin's 1936 F-20 back in the 40s and early 50s. A few years ago, I came across one of that vintage in a used-machinery dealer's yard, and after putting in some new valves, found that it ran pretty well. It was on my father's farm in NJ, and one summer day when I was there, I decided to see if the old magic was still alive. A meadow needed bushhogging, so I hooked up the old beast to see if it was still a joy to drive an F-20. The meadow was overgrown in those spiky rushes that grow in clumps that we used to call "hassocks." In other words, a pretty rough ride on any tractor. Well, the F-20 was not designed for comfort (I sort of knew that when I was a teenager, but all that was overridden by the thrill of operating such a powerful, bellowing bull of a tractor). The seat sticking out the back means that every upward movement of the front wheels means a quick downward movement of the seat, and vice-versa. There is also no good place to put your feet; either you pull your knees up halfway to your face and put your feet on the axle housing, or you drop them over the axle housing and try to find a spot somewhere near the transmission cover. In the latter case, your ankles bounce against the sharp edge of the rear axle housing. Decidedly not comfortable for a long ride. That particular day, I lost my boyhood nostalgia to some extent. The hassocks brought back just how rough a rider this tractor is, and of course, without a muffler, the noise is just short of deafening when the tractor is working hard. The steering on the F-20 is a decided improvement over the open gearing of the original Farmall (the gearing on the original is exposed, and after a few years, tends to get pretty sloppy; there is also no protection against kickback, so ruts or furrows can get a thumb or even an arm if you drop into one unexpectedly; the F-20 steering gear is not immune to kickback, but it seems to be less dangerous because the gear wheel has to work against a worm). One thing I remember vividly is that the iron wheel gives a kind of "live" feeling to the steering of the F-20; it is even possible to spin it a bit in a quick turn, which is something that is impossible with the later models with a rubber steering wheel--not enough mass to give a flywheel-effect. The steel-wheeled F-20 was designed to pull two 14" plows in second gear at about 3 mph. I never used one on steel, but I have spent over 10 years on a steel-wheeled (McD) 10-20 (approximately the same horsepower) and I can testify in court that it could not pull two 14's any faster than the about-three mph of second gear (the steel wheels absorb a lot of the engine power--as much as 35 percent, I believe). When the F-20 was converted to rubber, it became a roaring fighting bull, because so much more of the engine power went to the wheels(engine; probably about 28 or 29 on gasoline; it produced about 27 at Nebraska on distillate--only 23 on kerosene)(rubber, by my estimates after looking at Nebraska Tractor Tests, robs 10-15% of the engine power, depending to some extent, I think, on the amount of slippage). The usual size tire to replace the 40" steel wheels was 36", which gave an effective diameter of about 48"--quite a much larger wheel. I estimate second gear on 36" rubber to give nearly 4 mph, compared with about three on the 40" steel wheels. This tractor on rubber pulled two 14" plows with ease at that speed (this is like being able to plow one gear higher). The ride was atrocious, as I have mentioned above about my experience in the meadow. The noise out that big elbow exhaust was deafening. At 1200 rpms full-load, you can almost hear every explosion. Because the standard-tread F-20 is so wide, the plow has to be hooked off to the right side, with the result that the steering is constantly pulling to the right. There was no relaxation while plowing with this beast! With other jobs, like disking, a center hitch meant that you could relax a bit, but you still had to look out for furrows or other dips that might pull the steering out of your hands. It appears that the 36" rims were chosen to clear the brake drums. Anything smaller meant that the wheels had to be turned out, making the tractor even wider than it was meant to be. IHC offered 28" wheels, as well. You can see in photos of these tractors that the wheels were always turned out. This must have put some strain on the axles. One of the advantages of the smaller wheels would have been ground speeds about like the original steel-wheeled tractors. I used to drive my cousin's F-20 while pulling a PTO-driven combine. Low gear, which originally had been around 2 mph, must have been close to 3 mph on the 36" wheels. This worked pretty well most of the time, but every once in a while, you'd hit a patch of heavy, green weeds, and WHUMP! the combine would bog down. A slower ground speed might have given the combine time to digest the weeds better. With a PTO-driven combine, the only way to stop the machine and keep it spinning was to kick the tractor out of gear while it was moving. This was very difficult with a load on the PTO. If you were quick enough, and saw the weeds in time, you could blip the throttle closed, kick the gear lever forward, then open the throttle. The throttle and gear lever are on the same side; it's pretty difficult to blip the throttle with your right hand, push the gear lever to neutral, and open the throttle, all in the blink of an eye--otherwise, it's time to get off and unclog the combine cylinder!) On the other side of the coin, the large rear wheels gave the F-20 a pretty good "road gear" (at least for its day). I estimate that at full throttle, without a load (the engine speed goes up to just below 1400 rpms), the F-20 could slide along at close to six mph. On the rough roads that were so common back in the 30s and 40s, this made a pretty good speed to pull a loaded wagon, to take the tractor to a field a mile away, or drive to a relative's farm a couple of miles away to help out with a harvest. I remember the painfully slow third gear of my father's F-12 (about 4 mph, full throttle), and was always delighted when I could run an F-20 full bore along a road. Everything is relative, of course. After we got an H, the old 20 seemed incredibly slow. The H and M can do almost 18 mph at no-load governed speed, and at this speed, you really can feel some wind (as I got a little more mature, I didn't like driving the H wide open on the road--some wear had developed in the steering gear and the front wheels would wobble at an alarming rate when the tractor was opened up). The F-20 is an example of what I call "early" designs; it uses a big, slow-turning engine, which does not produce a lot of horsepower because of the low-speed, but it does put out a lot of torque. With a normal load, it was rare that the tractor did not have enough torque to pull through a spot of stiff clay or other overload, without shifting down. Compare this with a Farmall H (152 cubic inches displacement, compared to about 221 for the F-20). With an H, any overload meant an immediate downshift, because there wasn't much torque. Incidentally, the early Farmall gave a very low output in the only Nebraska test to which it was subjected; I believe this is because it used a 1" carburetor. Later models used 1-1/4", or the same size as an F-20. I had a few occasions to use a '29 Farmall on rubber, and I don't think it produced much less power than an F-20. Much was made of the new manifold and updraft carburetor when the F-20 came out. IHC claimed 15% more power, but they did not say if that meant compared to the early Farmall tested at Nebraska, or to a late model with the 1-1/4" carburetor. A few comments on restorations; 1. I have seen very few F-20s at shows with the original hot manifold (kerosene-distillate). These usually burned out, but the tractors were still going strong after 20 or thirty years, so farmers replaced the manifold with after-market manifolds designed for gasoline only. These are easily spotted because the intake pipes are pretty much separate from the exhaust manifold, so that the intake mixture does not expand too much. The original hot manifold was a massive casting with most of the induction pipes buried inside the casting. Even Ertl's so-called "Precision" F-20 missed this point. They probably looked at a real F-20, but it is unlikely that they knew much about the tractor. Another point about restorations; The rubber steering wheel probably came out sometime in 1937 (I have no data, but the '36 I owned and the one I used to drive both had iron wheels). Many restorations use iron wheels, which must be easy to find because they don't disintegrate. This looks a little strange coupled with the beautiful cast-iron rear wheels that came out late in the life of the F-20 (IHC publicity photos always show the cast-iron wheels along with a rubber steering wheel). Other restorers have replaced the rubber wheel with an open-spoked steering wheel from an H or M. Works, but definitely not kosher. Perhaps somebody is now producing authentic rubber-covered steering wheels for the IHC tractors of the late 30s? Governors; The original F-20 had a "throttling governor," identical to the design of the later original Farmalls (which had 2 styles of governor; the early one had open arms and rods leading to the carburetor; sometime around 1927, I'd guess, all the governor components were enclosed). In 1937, I believe (this can be checked with serial numbers), International came out with a "variable governor" for a number of the tractors with engines like the F-20's (10-20, W-30, F-30). This is the model with the notched pull-rod on the LEFT side of the gas tank. "Variable" in this sense means that the governor functions within a certain range of speeds, from full open to just above idle. The earlier governor on all tractors with this type engine did NOT govern below the full-throttle position. I have vivid memories of pulling a hay rake with an F-20, at part throttle in one of the higher gears. Every downgrade meant that the engine speeded up, and every upgrade meant that the engine slowed down. A variable governor would have controlled the engine speed. The control rod on the variable-governor model is connected via a cross-rod just behind the engine to a series of levers that eventually join up with a pull-rod that comes out of the rear of the governor housing. IHC made a retro-fit variable governor for these tractors, which had a special governor lid that held a bracket for the necessary lever. With this model, the governor-control notched rod was on the RIGHT side of the gas tank. It is a pretty elegant design for a retro-fit. There were other, similar governors sold by independent farm-supply stores (I remember one, Central Tractor). These usually had a lesselegant control setup than the IHC model. Sometimes when the variable governor was installed, no one bothered to take off the original throttle lever just in front of the steering wheel. Just behind the governor housing on the variable type, there is a little bellows which seals the governor from the outside, while still allowing the control rod to move in and out. I remember seeing a model (Ertl?) some years ago with both the bellows and the original throttle lever! (another case of copying something without understanding it). The same company even produced a "Regular" Farmall model with the bellows! This was only possible if the original governor had been replaced with the retrofit. In any case, the bellows doesn't belong on an authentic original Farmall (don't misunderstand me--the variable governor was wonderful, and I would certainly want it on a tractor that was meant to be used). I don't claim to be the last word on F-20 information, but I have some references to look things up in (parts book and a few old sales brochures), and would be happy to share any information I have.

I have been looking at 1949' and I have found that ALL of the exhausts were through the hood. The one I bought has a pipe that turns down and out to the back. Mike Mulligan wrote on Sunday, June 08, 2003 (PDT):DISTINGUISHING FEATURES BETWEEN WD AND WD45. These tractors are very much alike, almost identical, but there are a few ways to tell the difference. If your tractor is original this shouldnt be a problem. The easiest way to tell for sure is to look for the serial number which is located on the back of the tractor above the step on the back of the differential housing. Before the number it will say either WD or WD45. Thats easy enough. There are other differnces. Starting from the front of the tractor and working your way back; Many of the WDs had a small hole in the right side of grill that surrounds the radiator. This hole was for a shutter that controled the flow of coolant to make the engine run hotter or cooler. 45s usually didn't have this. The hole is located almost at the top on the right side of the radiator(not on the wire mesh grill in front but just around the corner on the side. A much larger differnce is the engine. WDs had a 201 cubic in engine that was usually equiped with magneto ignition. The WD45 had a 225 cubic inch engine which usually had a distributer ignition. The hydrolics were similar but the WD45 had traction booster and there was a gauge below the gas tank that said traction booster on it an when you lifted something you can see the needle on the gauge move. Another big differnce is the transmission however there is an exception. WDs prior to 1953 had a sliding gear transmission with a straight shift lever. In 1953, the last year for the WD and also the first year for the WD45 the transmission was changed to a constant mesh transmission which had a curved shift lever. The WD45 had snap coupler as standard equipment and the WDs did not. However snap coupler kits were made available for the WD so it is not uncommon to see a WD with snapcouple. I hope this information is helpful. It is correct to the best of my knowledge but remember there can be exceptions, especially if the tractor is not original. These tractors are so much alike and many parts can be interchanged. You may find out that half of you tractor is a WD and the other half is WD45. I have a WD45 with a D17 engine and a WD transmission and rear end. GOOD LUCK!

The serial # on the block behind the carb reads 107985. It has a hydralic resovior/pump behind the motor unlike the cub at the top of this page. You guest it, I won what was to be a restored Cub. Meaning it was painted,new tires, and ran good. I noticed some leaks,oil,gas,etc. So to date I have replaced all bearings,seals,bushings,trans & pto shafts,rebuilt carb,hyd pump & resivor,new oil pan. The only thing not rebuilt from front to rear is the eng & clutch. It is a fun toy and I love it. james corder wrote on Sunday, December 15, 2002 (PST):we never did have as fine a tractor as the MM GVI, however, i did drive a 1948 MM "U", it could outpull the super "M" farmall and would just leave the farmall when it came to plowing with 3-16's. I always thought the MM tractor company really knew how to put a tractor engine togeather, large cubes, long stroke, and low RPM. that always seemed to make sense for hard working engines where lots of torque was required. I like all MM tractors and collect the literature and toys. living in town i don't own a tractor right now, maybe someday.

Is it the pan seat or the one referred to in ads as the assembly, having a back and in some cases arms. The original operators manual shows the "assembly" style in all the photos. I have never seen this style seat on any Cub, I,ve always seen the pan seat.

I thought it would be a fun project to bring the old gal back to life. Only took a few hours to get it running but had to break the tractor in half to unfreeze the clutch. After fixing the clutch, I started cleaning and repainting. I also had to have the hydraulics overhauled due to pitting and leaking around the shaft. I finished the project in time to run it in the local 4th of July parade. Pulled a wagon full of cub scouts. Henry, you seem to be the Leader King. I would like to exchange email photos of my Leader with you if you would like. Let me know.

Jim Broughton wrote on Sunday, August 18, 2002 (PDT):To; C.Morris...If your Cub has been sitting up for awhile, chances are pretty good that the little oil "tube" that runs up to your oil filter is stopped up. You can clean it from above, but a better way is to remove the oil pan and "rod it" out from the bottom...while down there, you could check out your oil pump, but if it had good pressure before, I'd put my money on a stopped up oil line to the filter...they are famous for clogging up, especially if the oil is dirty or they have been sitting for a long time. Ponys don't even have hydraulics. Cubs may be a little underpowered, but they have more options. A hand lever is an option on a pony, but a hand lever and 2 years after Farmall Started, hydraulics were STANDARD. So take THAT.

Leonard J. Rahilly wrote on Friday, July 12, 2002 (PDT):Spent some of the best years of my younger life on two Farmall Hs, one a low-compression '41, the other a high-compression '51. Much, much more comfortable than an F-20, very easy to drive (more like an F-14), nice, agile chore tractor. Needed another gear between 4th and 5th, because 5th was just too high to be used with the engine throttle back to get 6-8 mph, as you often wanted to go over a gravel road or to haul a load of hay on such a road or on a path through the fields. The engine speed had to be kept up when the tractor was heavily loaded. With only 152 cubic inches, there really wasn't much torque for the heavy going (an F-20, with 221 cubic inches, just could not be stopped when the soil got heavy; it might slow down, but would just keep chugging along; the H would bog down and die on you if the going got too heavy). I always thought the H was the most beautiful tractor design EVER, but I must say that I was disappointed in the lack of power. Very nice to drive, by comparison with the older stuff, although today it seems pretty crude after you've been aboard one of these super-duper air-conditioned, power-everthing modern wonders.
Leonard J. Rahilly wrote on Friday, July 12, 2002 (PDT):I spent a lot of time on an F-20 in the 40s, and have owned a couple since 1980 (sadly, had to sell them when I moved into town last year). A really rough riding beast, with steering that was fairly easy but could break your arm if you hit a rut and were leaning through the spokes of the wheel, as lots of people used to do. Tremendous torque. Everybody said that the Farmall H couldn't keep up with an F-20, and I'm here to tell you it's true. The F-20 was designed to put out about 15 horsepower at the drawbar ON STEEL WHEELS. When it was converted to rubber, it became a roaring, snorting beast. I estimate the drawbar horsepower to be about 23 on rubber and burning gasoline. That is several more than the drawbar horsepower of a rubber-tired H. Besides, the engine has 221 cubic inches, versus 152 for the H, so there is a huge amount of torque. I used to love the beast. A few years ago, I bought an old F-20 and took it out in a rough meadow to do some "bushhogging." Wow, what a rough ride! I still admired the old gal, but I sure wouldn't want to do a lot of farm work with one today! Indestructible machinery--everything heavily made, big ball bearings on the crank, huge gears in the transmission and final drive.

Pat Rosato wrote on Friday, June 28, 2002 (PDT):Chuck.........if it still has a 6 volt battery, the left side is the positive side and that gets hooked up to the negative post on the battery. 6 volt batteries are installed in reverse. Positive post of the battery gets hooked up to the ground on the right side. On the right side of the tractor you will find a number on the side of the engine, Example; 5-14-A. That means it was made on May 14. The tractor serial number is on the right side on a plate attached to the clutch housing and will be a four digit number, like 6855. The engine serial number is located on the right side of the engine crankcase and will look something like C-169-22713. The C-169 means it is a carburated engine with a 169 cubic inch piston displacement. Hope this helps.

(My wife says I have a problem) It also came with a Howard rotovator and the reduction gearbox. I tried plowing in low range the other day and the right hand rear wheel does not pull. When I put it in high range both wheels pulled. Is this normal operation for the reduction gearbox? Also, the 56 came with a complete set of manuals; Operator, Service, Tractor Parts and Implement Parts for cubs equiped with Fast Hitch. The Service and Parts manuals are reproducable. Is anyone out there interested in obtaining copies?

It was a big stone walled ranch house with a 3 car garage. Part of the deal to rent the house was the fact that the grounds must be cared for as part of the rental contract ,not that we wouldn't have ,anyway. It was my job ,as the eldest child to cut the grass...........some 8 acres surrounding the hilltop house. It has a high and and low axel.Has hydralics that works with a snowblade land plow and a Howard rototiller plus a mott mower with a left side power take off. Jim Broughton wrote on Sunday, May 19, 2002 (PDT):Marion; Mask off around your I/D plate, then clean the paint off with lacquer thinner, careful, keep it off your new paint job ! I've got a 59w/fast-tach,it has a IH gem dandy of a plow,(works real well) a rear blade (it's actually a yan-mar blade, but it works fine. The best or most used tool, though is a five foot sickle-bar mower, which attaches to the under side of the engine housing, but powers off the PTO, and it really works well !! I recently acquired a set of cultivators for it, but I haven't tried them yet. Hope this helps !! P.S. A lot of the guys use a "woods" belly mower (rotary) with their Cub with good results . Jim

It has alot of IH red paint from recent paint job all over it. Is the info on the tag stamped in? What would be the best way to remove the paint and preserve the numbers and such? Also, I'd like to know what all was available in the way of attachments/implements for the Low-boy, including those pwered by the pto. From pictures it appears to be 1955-1957 model. So far I have removed the head gasket, starter, radiator and the generator. I have rebuilt & reinstalled all these items. Last Sunday I was able to start the tractor for the first time in about 30yrs. It runs like a sewing machine! It has all the original parts. It is still a 6-volt positive ground system. I still have a long way to go, but I have been enjoying myself rebuilding it.

Bill Osborne wrote on Friday, March 01, 2002 (PST):In looking over the comments, I noticed several who have problems with getting the plow to go in the ground, stay in the ground, or go deep enough. I have a '49 Cub w/1 bottom plow. Here's what you do; 1st=Turn the draw bar completely around. This puts the drawbar bolt holes ahead of the axle. Then attach plow by putting the plow hookup under the drawbar and inserting the bolts from the bottom side up. I also put an overside nut between plow and drawbar on both bolts which gives the plow more forward tilt. My plow works beautifully and plows 6-8" deep depending upon soil. Let me know if this works for you. I'll be checking the comment section.

Ralph this reminds me of a problem I had years ago with a four cylinmder eng. that would do the same one day it got to where it would start very quickly every time and idel great but wouldn't do anything else just die if you even acted like you were going to rev it up. After hours trying everything I could think of I replaced the condenser in the distributor with a new one, guess what everything was back to normal. TRY IT. And by the way I am a cub loboy owner as well with fingertip hydraulic control a 4 or 5ft. belly mower and doser blade for the front. I do know the mower is a WOODS built mower.

The super A replaced the A in 1947 and had more h.p., adjustable rear tred widthand other options. In the mid 50's dropped the "letter" series and began using numbers i.e. 130, 140, 230, 350, 450 etc. the 140 was introduced in 1958to replace the "A", there was also a 130 built from 56 to 58. Start your sequence with the very center hole in the center row #1 #2 is forward of that, next to the water intake ,#3 is just behind #1,to the rear of the head, next #4 is center left, #5 is center right, # 6 is just ahead of $4 on left side,#8 is just ahead of #5 on the right side. #7 is on left side ,just behind # 4...#9 is on the right side, just behind #5..#10 is front left,11 is front center, #12 is front right.. rear left is #13, rear center is #14 and rear right is #15. Warren Prill wrote on Friday, June 08, 2001 (PDT):My dad farmed with a M-H 55,44 and 101 Sr.Alle three were great farm tractors.The 55 came with 16x34 tires and we replaced them with 18x34 Firestones.Traction was much improved.We had 300# of wheel weights on each rear wheel and each rear wheel was filled with water.Our 55 did not have power steering but it did have a Charlyn hydraulic pump driven off of the PTO.For added power we over hauled the the big 4 with M&W pistons.Cubic inches were over 400 and the HP was near 80 or so.No big deal by today's standards but in the late50 and 60's nothing could out pull it.No J-D, no M-M,no Oliver,no Farmal,no A-C ,no Cockshut 50.Nothing. The M&W powered 55 with had was the King of the Hill. The only problem we ever had was the 6 volt ignition system. Not enough juice to crank the big bore 4 over.We put the biggest 6 volt on the market in the tractor,but on winter mornings,starting this animal could be hard.We often had to assist the 6 volt with the hand crank.The hand crank operator had to be ready in case of a back fire so as not to get a broken arm or wrist.Yes, the 55 was powerful and economical.During its era,nothing could match it,regardless what others might say,the 55 ruled. Our other M-H models were the 44 and 101 SR. We also put M&W pistons in the 44 and bumped the H-P to nearly 60.It was also a pulling fool, but needed more weight the front end could be lifted quite easy pulling a heavy load.It had a 5 speed gear box.Highway speed was good.Versatile,powerful tractor. The 3rd "Massey" we used was the 101 Sr.It had a 6 cylinder Chrysler engine.We used this tractor to cultivate beans and corn.We had a front mounted 4 row cultivator.With no power steering and all that weight on the front wheels,it took strong hands and arms to operate.You did not have to lift weights to build your muscles, just spend 8 hours a day turning the cultivator and you had a good work out.The best thing about the 6 banger was the road speed.You could easily top 20 mph. In their day,in my opinion,no tractor could out pull a Massey Harris or out perform a Massey Harris.We had other tractors while we had the "Massey's",Case( we called it the "hopeless case"),Farmal Super M,Co-OP E-3.Massey Harris beat them all. The only real difference between the 55 and 555 were a few features like power steering and some hydraulics I believe. The 555 had some chrome on the hood,and was only made for one or two years.

You will get better action and performance out of a regular "pull-behind" disc than you will out of the fast-hitch type,or even a three point disc, especially on the corners! You should have a drawbar attachment that goes on (bolts) to the bottom of your fast-hitch..simply put it on and either use a trailer ball or a clevis pin to attach a standard disc, takes about four concrete blocks to make 'er cut good, but you'll get good results !! The "field" from generator to "F" on the regulator.. The gray wire goes from the "Bat" terminal of the regulator to the ammeter.The light green wire from the "L" on the regulator to the ignition switch, and on through the fuse holder to the "bat" side (left) of the light switch..the violet wire goes from the "high" side of the light switch (upper right) to the headlights. The black and the white wires go to the rear light and or the flashers, is you have any, and are connected to the "low" switch and the lower left side.You can obtain the info from Intertec Int'l Cub shop manual.. P.O.Box 12901,Overland Park,KS 66282-2901.

If so remove it CAREFULLY. take it to a sign shop or a plastics company with a PATTERN ROUTER...they can duplicate it for you in 1/4 inch chrome plastic...simply drill small one eighth inch hole where the screws go and mount it on your tractor. That's what I did on my 59, and it looks great..the only giveaway is it is shinier than the original.

C.W.Broughton wrote on Monday, October 02, 2000 (PDT):To; Dan Schloesser...installing the sycle bar mower is kind of tricky...pull it out so you have lots of maneuvering room set the mower so that the pto shaft/pulley is at right angle to mower blade...then drive your cub from the right up to and at 90 degrees to the pto shaft of mower or parrallel to the mower blade..pull up to the pto shaft pulley so rear wheel almost touches,hit your right brake and turn hard,pull forward so that rear right wheel almost touches the pitman arm/mower blade, then turn wheels to left and back up and align mower underneath tractor. Place a jack underpitman arm pulley/saddle bracket and jack up to meet the two bolts on the transmission case of tractor. Attach bolts.then remove three lower bolts on pto housing abd bolt pulley bracket there,be sure and put belt on pulleys as you do this. Last,tighten the "adjustment bolt on lower end of pulley bracket. See. it's easy !!

Was driving down a road near by had happen to come across a cub cadet sitting, so as any male thats into cub cadet would stop and inquire about tractor. In the line of bs out came that he had a John Deere H for sale and saying to myself humm this could be interesting to see. So my first site of tractor i said i have to own it.Now to make story short its home already restored and the fevers on as to now i own 3 JD H's , 2 JD B's, JD 110,112 lawn tractors. I have read that Cubs destined for various governments' landscaping chores were painted yellow with white wheels, so maybe that explains yours. Also, if the serial number plate has FCUB on it, it's not a Lo-Boy. The differences between a Cub and a Lo-Boy are that the final drive units are rotated 90' forward and the front spindles are shorter. If you want more Cub info, go to www.atis.net/cub_faq.html. The tractor doesn't have enough muscle to pull it even in low gear. What could be the problem? Under normal conditions will a Cub handle a 12" fast hitch plow in previously worked soil. I am very disappointed so far in my attempts. Any ideas on what could be my problem.

Grandad always used it for a cultivating tractor and, I have no idea how to attach the plow and disks to the tractor. I want to get a Woods belly mower so I can use this tractor to cut grass, but my cub does not have a pto, it just a round plate on the back of the transmission. What would be involved in addind a PTO? I know where there is a junked Farmall B with a Pto, will that fit? Can anyone tell me how the disks and plows attach to the tractor?

We took it down piece by piece, had all parts brought in to be sandblasted and painted (international red). Meanwhile, we got in contact with an International Dealer in Alvin Texas and had them order us a Parts and Service Manuel. It was the best $90.00 we could have spent! When we got the tractor from the paint yard, putting it back together was a piece of cake with the manuels. We worked long and hard for 4 months restoring. We are now at a point where our 4 acreas have been cleared (using a Kubota) and we are now cutting with the cub. The yard is so well manicured. Our neighbor is thinking about buying him one. My husband just puts the hand crank in it and she fires up! I wouldn't take anything for it!

It needs fluid but the only thing that is listed in the manual is IH-Hytran oil. From what I can see this is SAE 80 for winter and SAE 90 for summer. Is this the correct oil to use?

I found a aftermarket battery box, does anyone know if they put the metal plate,(battery box cover) on top of the battery with a rubber mat to keep the post from contacting the metal. Also does anyone know where you can find the orignal type of wiring, I think it had a outside woven covering. Thanks. Red forever..........

I am trying to find out exactly what year it was built, and any info that I can. I have been doing some research, cant get all the answers through the books that I have seen. The serial number is 22976 J, it is yellow and white, is the offset frame style with a hood that ends in a straight metal edge on the front, and an expanded metal grille on the front. It has round headlights sticking through the sides of the hood. It has an original model 54 snow blade, and a white belt driven 5 foot mower deck. Larry Nicholson wrote on Thursday, February 24, 2000 (PST):question My 1951 Cub has a 12 volt system and I cannot stop the points from pitting up in a couple of hours. I have changed the points and condenser many times, tried both the original condenser and a 12 volt condenser. The gap is correct, the timing is correct and when a new set of points is installed it runs great for two hours and then breaks up and you can see deep burn marks on the points. When running the voltage stays at 12 volts I have not seen any spikes in the voltage. Any ideas would be a great help?

I use it for light dirt, mulch, and snow moving with the front mounted blade. I also have a five foot, belly-mount mower. I find that the tractor does not have to power to move well at all, especially up-grade with the mower on. Is that a universal complaint, or am I doing something wrong? My little John Deere garden tractor with a 44" deck can mow rings around it. It is still a fun machine for me, who never had a tractor before.

There is a bracket that bolts onto the back of the tractor that is used with a long rod about 5 feet long that connects to the lift bar on the side of the tractor. I don't know what these two pieces are called, but they are missing and I would like to know about how much they might cost to replace either new or used. Also, a second question has to do with replacing brake parts on the cub. How difficult is it? From what I can see, it doesn't look as if it would be too hard, but then I have never tried to do anything like this on a tractor before. There is always a first time.....thank you any and all for any information.

Ken P. wrote on Friday, July 02, 1999 (PDT):I have a 1948 Vac. It has a 5 foot WOODS brand belly mower on it. I use it to mow our very large yard. I own a small sawmill and I also use the tractor for moving around lumberwagons. My next project is to rebuild an old lumber edger and power it with the Case. I use to own a mid sixties Cub LoBoy, also with a five foot deck, {International deck.} I used it for four years, but I was always throwing money at it. The Case is ten times the tractor, I love using it, hope to have it for a long time.

It was in good shape when I got it and have had to go through replacing fluids etc. I aquired manuals and have had a lot of fun just owning it, have had it on 4th of July parade and on display in St. Peters for the town picnic, it's just the right size.

This tractor ran like a champ up til when it was stored 2 years ago. It is in great structural shape with good paint (RED). All attachments are complete. It won't start due to needing a carb. rebuild and magneto overhaul. I inhereted it about 15 years ago - no paperwork or owners manual. That seemed a fair price for the previous three I'd looked at were selling for $2200, 2400, and 2800. I will probably restore it, at least partially, but I just bought it because I'm 62 now and had wanted one since I was a kid. It came with a blade on front and a sickle bar, but I'll use it probably for snow removal and pulling logs out of the woods. BUT I bought really because I wanted to have it. I've since found the men of the neighborhood walking round and round it muttering to themselves with jealousy. That's enough of a reason to have it.
