This picture is a 1942 version. Originally introduced in 1939, it replaced the F-20. Introduced at the same time as the larger Model M, many of the mounted implements were interchangeable between the two. Most models were narrow-front, although wide-front and high-crop versions were available. |

I have driven 2 different farmalls that did the same thing and the guy on Sept. 28 is probabaly right. I got pretty good lining up the shifting mechanism. In addition, I found that if you try to shift with any speed it seems to happen more often. Pull the gearshift out, line things up and be really careful. Good Luck
bernard wrote on Saturday, September 28, 2013 (PDT):This could be the anser for john,his tractor is locked up he can start the tractor in neutrol, but when you let out the clutch it kills the motor.remove the shifting leaver one shifting plate is out of line. stick a lg.screwdriver or bar click the shifting plate in line. all plates should be in line look like a u. This happens when the end of your shifting is wore.

I took all gears and bearings out of the case inspected them replaced 1 slightly worn pilot bearing, replaced all seals found no broken bearing holders or bad gears. I bought a 1948 H tractor 2 months ago and when I drove it in 4th. gear the front weels wobbled really bad. I loaded itonmy rrailer and took it home. The nut on the stearing shaft in the case up frontd was completely off the shaft.The gear was loose too on thedown shaft. Itis tapered so I hit it lightly down and tightened the nut. Helped a lot. still wobbled some in 5th gear. I put a tapered plate on the pedistool with the 4 bolts. Put the wide part to the rear. Now the tractor goes down the road in road gear and goes straight. I paid 950.00 for the H. many go for opvwer 1200. here.

When i got it the tractor did not run and it had three bad tires but lucky for me it wasn't stuck. so i just replaced the condensor and put in in spark plugs, wires, got new tires for it and put in some fresh gas and cranked her up on the second time it turn over.But now it smokes and my dad says it prolly needs some new rings because it is a rich white smoke. But i put it in a local parade and i won the best tractor of show! it is one of the best tractors ever!
Greg Sebring wrote on Sunday, June 11, 2006 (PDT):My Mother-in-Law owns a '46 "H". We use it to pull a brush hog to cut weeds only. Lately it loses power when it warms up. It starts easy all the time but when it gets up to temp, you can not make it up the ramp to get it back in the barn. It has good plugs/wires/ and proper coolant. Any "H" mechanics have an idea why the tractor loses power. Any throttle adjustment above an idle stalls it out when hot. Am I looking at valves, head gasket, or condenser? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am now very proud of my work.This tractor has all the fixings from a belt pulley, toolbox, electric start,and a custom PTO cover with my name on it.I want a precleaner but I can not find one.Can someone help me. Now my dad and I are now working on a Farmall M, but we need a little help getting the motor and pistons unstuck. We have used deisel fuel, but unfortunaly that has not worked. If anyone has any suggestions I will be willing to try them.

Leonard Rahilly wrote on Thursday, January 23, 2003 (PST):On converting 4-speed to 5-speed; The shift rail for 4th and 5th gear is toward the left side of the transmission, and apparently slides forward under the gas tank when 5th gear is engaged. There is a little capscrew in the tranny cover, somewhere under the gas tank. If 5th is locked out, the cap screw is long enough to block the shifter rail from coming forward. If this bolt (I seem to remember that it has about a 9/16" hex head) is backed out, or replaced by a shorter bolt, the shifter rail can move forward and shift the dog clutch (just like the old 3rd gear direct-drive dog clutch in American standard shift cars). Incredibly clever. It meant one manufacturing step for two uses. Actually, I wonder if an H would pull itself in 5th gear on steel wheels. If it did, I sure wouldn't want to ride on it. The H and M do all of 5 mph in 5th with the engine at a dead idle. Anything above idle speed would be one rough ride on steel wheels! I cannot tell you exactly which of the bolts in the top of the transmission does the blocking, but you can pretty well guess by estimating about where the shifter rail would be (opposite to the direction of the gear shift lever; lever right for 5th gear, shift rail would be the leftmost of the 3).

Rahilly wrote on Thursday, January 23, 2003 (PST):A reader (way, way up on that list!) has repeated something I read in the book called "Letter Series Farmalls" (in my opinion, one of the few quite good books on antique tractors--more facts, well checked out, than most of these slick books). This book states that the Farmall H was meant to replace the F-14. Well, maybe dealers were told to encourage that, but I have some original IH sales literature from the late 30s and early 40s, and in those brochures, IH very clearly said that the H was a "full two-plow tractor" (meaning 2 14" plows). I spent many years working two H's, and neither of them would measure up to an F-20, and that is because, I believe, the H was deliberately designed to pull the same load as a steel-wheeled "10-20" sized tractor. This the H will do. It is a second-gear only plowing tractor. Very seldom would either of our two H tractors plow in third. An F-20 would often plow in third, if the ground was not too hard, and in any case, on 36" wheels, the F-20 would do almost 4 mph in second gear, and still pull the two 14" plows rippin' and snortin' through the field. The H is a h. of a lot more comfortable, I'll give it that, and it was a delight to drive in its day, compared to the old iron it replaced. The H is a very nice chore tractor, so it could, indeed, replace an F-12 or an F-14 very comfortably. It is easy to get on and off of, easy to steer, and small enough to maneuver around in tight places, like the -12 and the -14. It wouldn't surprise me if dealers were told to push the H as a replacement for the F-14, but I would like to see this in writing. The book I mentioned does NOT give evidence for this statement. One of the effects of the lightening up of tractors (the engine on the H is only 152 c.i.d., as compared to 221 c.i.d. for the F-20) is that they kind of straddled categories. The H, in other words, could be a light chore tractor, like an F-14, but it could also do a good bit more heavy work in the field. As a chore tractor, with its engine not much bigger than an F-14, it didn't burn a lot of gas. None of my comments are meant to detract anything from the value of the H. I used to wish for more power, but I never didn't like the tractors. Compared to some of its contemporaries, it was very comfortable (nice platform, good seat, good seating position, steering wheel placement, etc.). I never liked the gear lever; it was always bumping the calf of your leg in the rearward positions, and you usually banged your arm on the steering wheel going for the forward gear positions (R, 2, 4). The external-contracting brake bands were a step backwards from the internal brakes of the F-14, but they did work pretty decently, even if they sometimes squealed. The governor leaver was not well designed, either. It was quite a reach when it was in the slow position, and if you were turned around to the right in your seat, watching a mower or a combine, it was a LONG reach. Much better to have a vertical quadrant, with the lever parallel to the steering wheel.

Leonard J. Rahilly wrote on Friday, July 12, 2002 (PDT):Spent some of the best years of my younger life on two Farmall Hs, one a low-compression '41, the other a high-compression '51. Much, much more comfortable than an F-20, very easy to drive (more like an F-14), nice, agile chore tractor. Needed another gear between 4th and 5th, because 5th was just too high to be used with the engine throttle back to get 6-8 mph, as you often wanted to go over a gravel road or to haul a load of hay on such a road or on a path through the fields. The engine speed had to be kept up when the tractor was heavily loaded. With only 152 cubic inches, there really wasn't much torque for the heavy going (an F-20, with 221 cubic inches, just could not be stopped when the soil got heavy; it might slow down, but would just keep chugging along; the H would bog down and die on you if the going got too heavy). I always thought the H was the most beautiful tractor design EVER, but I must say that I was disappointed in the lack of power. Very nice to drive, by comparison with the older stuff, although today it seems pretty crude after you've been aboard one of these super-duper air-conditioned, power-everthing modern wonders.

I even pulled the Anheuser Bush Six-Pack sled! (no I didn't win) Some of the best times of my life were riding ol "HENRY"

Maurice wrote on Thursday, June 28, 2001 (PDT):In the early fifties my Dad traded an Oliver 70 and a Massey Harris 44 in for a new H and a new Super M. He felt that the Farmalls were the first real tractors he ever owned. He farmed with those tractors for over thirty years and they both ran as good as new when he quit farming and sold them at auction. I can not remember either of those tractors failing to start or unable to handle any job we asked them to do. Great tractors! How sad to see the International Farmall name go.

Wasn't looking but a friend said he had a tractor he need to get rid of. Seeing the smile on my wifes face and the cheers my the kids sealed the sale. I am lucky to have a pro H mechanic as a neighbor. Started learning alot about 1949 6-volts and shived pulley systems. 1st goal is to get it to the Arcadia, MD steam and tractor round-up in August. That's when we found out what the H stnads for. Hill. If you park the tractor on a hill, it's easy to start! Just put it in 3rd, clutch it, and pop the clutch after you start moving!

Just take that lever for that pump off and put a spring on it to keep the pump on. Then mount 2 two-way valves anywhere, but mount them so you can run hoses to the pump. After that, run hoses from the valves to the loader/bucket. You won't have to run the pump; the spring will keep it running. Just the valves are what you operate the loader/bucket on. Thats where they cut the steel rims off, put on a flat bottom rim and pnuematic tires. Was this common during the war. The rims are spoked like an F-20. I also need to replace the rims. One rusted out and when my Dad owned the tractor and I replaced it with a dropcenter rim off a Cockshutt, but I would like them to both be the same. I repainted it and re-deacaled it, and parked it in the new barn after they left the Farm. Last Sept. my dad passed away. The old Farmall still sits waiting in the new barn. I think we will always keep the H in the Family. Alot of good memories over those 40 years. I wish I could calculate how many miles are on that old H ?? ;>)

Dennis Seaton wrote on Wednesday, May 03, 2000 (PDT):Just a note to tell the readers what i decided to do to my h.I put a 12 volt battery besided the 6 volt battery and wired just the starter to the 12 volt battery for this was the only reason i wanted 12 volts , for starting. Tractor runs fine on 6 but starting was sometimes troublesom. 12 volt battery spins engine and the ol girl starts within 2 turns of the engine. If want to sell all i need to do is hook the old wire to the starter back up, and your back to original. Thanks to all who responded but I come up with this one myself.

Still cultivates the tobacco every year and is resting when it doesn't. After I long spring in these newer, higher horsepower, air-conditioned tractors, it feels real good to fire up the OLD H and start putting across the tobacco patch.

in the know wrote on Thursday, December 30, 1999 (PST):Joey, There is no such thing as a "6 volt resistor". Resistors are measured in "ohms". When you convert from 6 volt to 12 volt on your electrical system the only place you need to install a resistor is in the wire to the coil if you retain your 6 volt coil and to your lights if you don't change them to 12 volt units. Phil, The W-9 was not "about the same rating as an F-30". The W-9 had considerably higher HP.

Also takes away from value. Just put a 6 volt resistor on your hot wires going to each electrical unit"starter,generator,lights" It'll cost about 15$.

Ron wrote on Friday, November 12, 1999 (PST):To convert 6 volt to 12 volt install a 12 volt alternator to replace the generator. Install a resistor ahead of the coil. Replace the battery with a 12 volt negative ground. The present 6 volt starter will work but don't grind on it very long.

Dick Davis wrote on Thursday, July 08, 1999 (PDT):A white painted raditor grill sounds like a IH dealer repaint after the IH 350's came out. IH dealers did a lot of repaints on older tractors as a way of keeping their workforce employed in the slack time of the year. When the 350's came out to diferentiate them from earlier 300's, they had grill inserts painted white ( cream?). I'll bet a donut that a dealer talked a farmer into painting his H to "Look exactly like a 350!"

One has a small pushrod which pushes directly on the starter switch, and the other is a type of lever system to activate the switch.I presume both are pushed in by your foot.Which one would be more correct. Our farm was only 60 acres but we share cropped nearly 500 acres in the immediate area in Michigan. The grill of this tractor was red. I have never seen a white grill on a Farmall H. Before the H my dad had a Farmall F-12 that he converted to a F-14. This was the close front wheel model. Bob
