Mike Kieliszewski wrote on Saturday, June 26, 2010 (PDT):I own a 1929 1530 rated 2236, about 15 years ago we were at a show with a dyno, they rated the power left on the belt of 34hp. hope i have that much when i get that old. it has an enclosed pickering flyball governor installed which must have been an option as it was on an old saw mill operation in the area. it is on rubber newer but not painted. water pump leaks a little and crack in exhaust manifold stored indoors. it starts faithfully on the third flip. Thinking on selling it not sure where to start thinking 2500.00. There is some sentimentalvalue as my father-n- law was the person who brouht it to life and grew up on his type of tractor. The guy that I got it from said he remembers his dad bringing it home to that same farm. They dropped it off in the field when it was new and they drove it home about 3 miles. I do not know what is worth but I was thinking about putting it on Ebay for a 1000 starting price. Call me if anyone wants to make a offer on it. Flora Hayes wrote on Friday, December 05, 2008 (PST):I had the same problem with my 1925 McCormick Deering 10-20. There are two possibilities on how to identify the year. first, look on the left side of the engine block, stamped into it should be the serial number. provided the engine was never changed. Next look under the tractor. The main tractor housing , or tub, wich houses the trans, and undercaraige, in the middle right directly below the gear shifter, there are raised numbers in the casting. It will tell you the date of the casting, not the tractor year, but it will get you close. On mine it said 4 feb 1924, my serial number on the block showed it to be a 1925. Hope this helps.

I couldnt find any paint codes for it, but instead had a professional auto painter match up some paint that i found to be most original on the tractor.. I found the best color under some grease on the air cleaner. we matched it and painted the whole thing that color orange. All of the pictures ive ever seen of E-3 s show them being all orange, with no secondary colors. Good Luck.. Its a fun adventure.. a pretty rare tractor!

The Plow can be restored as well. I had to brace my foot on the fender to turn it. The 4 is still in the family, but in sad condition. Parts have been stolen off it, and kids have shot their 22 s at it. My brothers sold the 6, and it went to Ark. I remember daddy farming with them, and how very slow they ran. These tractors have always been very dear in my memories. I am 76 years old.

William Farley wrote on Thursday, July 13, 2006 (PDT):In northwestern Montana, Dad owned a large Twin City tractor with steel rear wheels that were at least four feet high. These wheels contained rows of "lugs" or solid steel triangles that spiked out from the rim, providing traction in soft ground. We used the tractor to power our saw mill that we ran on our homestead. It had a PTO with an 18" pulley on the left side that was perfect for hooking up to a belt that ran to the pulley for the saw's flywheel and blade. I do not know the year or model, but remember distinctly the big "T" superimposed over the "C" in an oval just above the radiator. The engine was very powerful and smooth-running. It was started by a crank at the front and the spark was provided by a magneto. Would anyone have an idea as to its approximate model year? We used the tractor in the late 1940s to the mid 1950s. It was never used by my father and just stayed parked up in a shed and under some trees. We played on it as kids. It would be correct to say it has done very little work as there was little flat land on the Waldies farm. The farm was sold to the neighbours in 1968 and the Avery stayed put eventually finding its way into the hands of Simon Pearce. I think it had a updraft carb riginally and a trembler coil ignition set up.

Cockshutt sold both Allis Chalmers tractors amd Oliver thractors under its name in its history. My Father had two Chockshutt 99 and I still have the newest one in my storage shed. It was an Oliver 99 painted Cockshutt red and with Cockshutt cast in the upper radiator tank. Oliver had Oliver there and was painted green. There were an number of Cockshutt tractors in this area of Canada (East of Calgary) and were all Olivers models 70, 80, 90 and 99. In the late 1940's Chockshut built it's own tractor the model 30. It was a nice little tractor but without some of the features Ford had such as a three point hitch. Because of this and it's size it was not a big seller in this area. I am looking for parts for my Cockshutt99/Oliver99 such as a rebuilt Marvel Shebler carbureator and a generator.

It should stamped and may include the year. The year will be first and the serial number after. We have the serial numbers if you do not find the year and we can help you out. Ron Haddock wrote on Thursday, December 18, 2003 (PST):There was a kit available from the Ford Motor Company and a group that called their product "The Thiesen Tractor" My great Uncle had one in his barn for years. It had the Model T engine and drive train, but there were chain sprocket for the drive wheel hubs with chain drives to oversized tractor wheels below. I don't recall much about the frame or steering except that it resembled an F-20 and, of course, was all steel. Somebody bought it out of the shed probably 25 years ago, but I don't have any idea who it was.

One says it was probably made/imported in 1910, but the other group, which has a vested interest in making it seem more commonplace (and so able to be exported) claims that it was only produced from 1916. This seems to be at odds with the picture on this website of a 1910 version. Any (brief) suggestions? Also, mention is made in one of the stories of an Avery 5-10 being sold in the United States in the past week -- can anybody tell me approximately how much it sold for in US dollars or is there some other indicationof the dollar value of an Avery 5-10? Thanks - I've included the two stories below; Wanganui, Sept 18 - Vintage tractor enthusiasts are battling to have Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Judith Tizard use the Antiquities Act to declare a rare old tractor should not be exported by its Irish purchaser. The ministry declined the export permit in July, but Irish owner Gerry King has appealed and a spokeswoman for the ministry, Margaret Marks, said today the decision was now in the hands of Ms Tizard. This is the first time the ministry has declined an export permit for a tractor of this nature, and if Mr King's appeal is unsuccessful, the ministry will order the rare Avery tractor stay in New Zealand. Rural contractor Roger Mahon, a critic of the efforts to ship out a crucial piece of the nation's history, said the tractor was the only known model of its kind in New Zealand and was one of the earliest tractors to come to this country. The rare friction-driven machine was imported to New Zealand by Wanganui-based company Hatrick and Co during the very early years of last century. It was reputed to be the first tractor to arrive in Wanganui. Further checks worldwide have only located one other in the United States and that was claimed to have been made in 1910. Mr Mahon said its model designation of 5-10 referred to five horsepower at the drawbar, and 10 horsepower on a belt pulley. Its transmission was a friction-drive, a right-angled flange wheel against a large flat faceplate. The transmission drive flange had a fibre outer surface that could be disengaged simply by moving it away from the driving faceplate. The tractor's speed could be varied by moving the drive closer to the centre of the plate, for a slow speed, and out to the outer edge to go faster. For ``reverse gear'' the drive switched to the opposite side of the flange plate. ``Friction drives were simple and gave a variation of speeds when most other tractors had only one forward gear,'' Mr Mahon said. ``The Avery did a lot of farm work from ploughing, discing and pulling hay carts to sawbench work,'' Mr Mahon said. To use the belt pulley. with the tractor stationary, a locking pin and transmission drive cog had to be removed. The New Zealand model has had a more modern carburettor and magneto fitted but started out life with trembler buzz coils similar to Ford's Model T, powered by dry batteries. Mr Mahon said the mid-mounted seating position was only common to the earliest of tractors, as were totally exposed drive gears to the rear wheels. It was discovered nearly 30 years ago through a chance meeting in Levin. Mr Mahon was a contractor on a rural water scheme for the Horowhenua District Council in 1973 when hunter Bob Burling told him of the ``funny-looking old tractor'' that had been abandoned under a collapsed shed at the head of the Waitotara Valley, near Wanganui. ``Bob had stumbled across the tractor during a hunting trip and would have loved to have bought it, but there was no way of getting it out. He took photos of it and removed the name plates, which he still has.'' A local farmer, Simon Pearce, cut an access track with a D4 bulldozer to tow the tractor back to his farm further down the valley. ``Using a few farm tools, Simon managed to get the tractor running after pouring diesel down the cylinder bores to unseize the pistons,'' Mr Mahon said. ``He told me he used to drive it from his farm homestead out to the road to collect his mail and stores.'' During the 1970s, while installing a fibre optic cable from Levin to Patea, Mr Mahon found Mr Pearce had sold his farm. He had also sold the tractor for $300 to a Hamilton man, but he'd forgotten the buyer's name. Later Mr Mahon was told by an antique tractor enthusiast, Alan Marx from Eltham, that the very rare Avery tractor had been sold to an overseas buyer who was seeking an export permit. ``I wrote a strongly worded letter opposing the permit giving the history I had about it. It amazed me I was the only person at that stage to know where the tractor had come from and the little history about it,'' Mr Mahon said. ``After Hatrick imported it to Wanganui it was sold to the Waldie family who developed a farm from bush land at the head of the Waitotara Valley. They sold the farm about 1946. Hatrick became New Zealand agents for Avery and sold tractors and products throughout New Zealand,'' Mr Mahon said. ``Most people I have spoken to would like to see the tractor returned to Wanganui where it began life in New Zealand. ``If the people of Wanganui don't want it, I'm sure somebody in New Zealand will buy it,'' Mr Mahon said. NZPA WGC kca Timaru, Oct 11 2002 - An international tug-of-war over a rare vintage tractor being exported from New Zealand by its Irish owner is still waiting on a decision by Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister, Judith Tizard. The Ministry of Arts the Culture and Heritage declined in July an initial first application for an export permit, but owner Gerry King appealed, and vintage tractor enthusiasts who say the tractor is part of the national heritage want Ms Tizard to block the export. A spkoesman for the minister said today Ms Tizard was seeking independent advice before making the decision. The friction-driven tractor is housed at Ben Lewis' property in South Canterbury awaiting Ms Tizard's decision. Mutual friends in Northern Ireland put Mr King in touch with Mr Lewis, who in April agreed to pack the tractor ready for export. The tractor had been for sale for about four years before Mr King paid ``a considerable amount'' for it, Mr Lewis said. He would not disclose the price paid for the tractor. Mr Lewis said today there was a lot of misinformation being spread about the tractor, which would hinder the export being approved. He suggested rural contractor Roger Mahon, a critic of efforts to ship out the tractor, was wrong in thinking the tractor was the only known model of its kind in New Zealand and one of only two in the world. It was not one of the earliest tractors to come into this country, Mr Lewis said. The first tractor was imported in 1904, but Mr King's friction-driven machine was imported by Wanganui-based company Hatrick and Co around 1918, he said. The American Avery tractors of this 5-10 model were in production from 1916-1920. ``This was not the first tractor in this area, as Mr Mahon claims, and is not the only tractor of its kind,'' Mr Lewis said. ``One sold last week in America.'' Mr Lewis said several parts of the machine were not original, including the chassis rail (where the serial number indicating the tractor's age would have been written), the ignition system, side rails, engine bonnet, seats, and fuel tank. Mr Mahon claimed the tractor did a lot of farm work including ploughing and pulling plough carts, but Mr Lewis disagreed. Mr Lewis said this was misleading. There was very little wear and tear on the tractor, which indicated it had done little work. Before buying the tractor Mr King checked regulations regarding its export to Ireland and was given the ``all clear'', Mr Lewis said. ``Mr King had been supplied with incorrect information. He had done everything that should have been necessary, but now finds he was given the wrong information.'' Mr Lewis hoped once Ms Tizard learned the tractor was not as rare as Mr Mahon claimed she would approve the export permit. He said Mr King was very frustrated that he was unable to have his tractor. I almost entered up in a pull but got in the wrong class and missed my run. it should have been in the 4500# class. many pull assoc dont have a class that small but ask the feller running the show and if you get a few to run with you some times the'll let it fly. to get my paint colors i matched some paint on the engine side of the air filter.. it seemed to be the most original with no sun fading. i got my decals through Recovery Specialties up in Canada. The only time I had trouble with it, was when water got down the exaust pipe one winter and rusted one cylinder bad. I freed it up changed the rings in that cylinder and ran it another 10 years with absolutely no trouble. I am told the old girl is worth as much now as when I bought it. They are in great shape, and they both run great, too, as he is a retired diesel mechanic. He uses both of them on his farm in North Dakota. I believe he is planning to restore both of them at some point in his life, but for now, he is using them around the farm. They are not ready for retirement yet. They definitely get the job done, and he is very proud of them.

Four to five horse pull with sieve grip wheels. Tractor built by Samson Iron Works, in Stockton Calif. One cylinder, 7" bore, 9" stroke. It is built low to the ground to work in orchards, unlike other tractors which are high above the ground to work in crop fields.

The other was given to my dad from his uncle for restoring a farmall super m, he gave it to me since i already had one. The farmcrest was repainted about 5 years ago but i still havent found decals for it. If you know where i might get them please let me know. It runs and looks like new. I use it to pull wagons in from the field in the fall and take it to plowing nearby plowing festivals a few times a year. I usually pull a 3 bottom John Deere w/ 14 inch bottoms in 3rd Low. I have 2 100pound weights on each wheel and put 4 IH suitcase weights on the drawbar when plowing. In packed ground it tends to run out of power have to shift down a gear. Does anyone know how many bottoms this tractor was designed to pull? Also ive had problems w/ the steering, it is quite hard to steer and the front wheels wobble a tiny bit at higher speeds. Has anyone else had this problem? The model 30 seems to have a lot of power for its size, if i remember right mine has 32hp at the pto last time i had it on the dyno. They seem to be a little light though, mine was helpless untill i added the wheel weights, which seem hard to find.

Their power gave him many ribbons. No I am desparately looking for 1/16 scale models of these tractors for a farm tractor collection for future grandchildren. My parents have died. I can't seem to match it up to a year but it looks pretty much like the one in the picture above but it also has a frontend loader. The photo was taken by Ozzie Sweet. New Information on this as follows; it was built by the Minneapolis Steel and MAchinery Company and had simple oil cups that needed to be kept filled. The front wheels did not have bearings.

The bulletin that accompanied the stamp reported the following; Cockshutt "30" Farm Tractor Cockshutt Farm Equipment Limited was founded in 1877 by James G. Cockshutt, who invented a series of implements, including the J.G.C. Sulky Plow. The firm designed tractor-pulled implements and offered a line of American-built tractors. Ending the U.S. agreement, the company decided to design and build its own line of tractors and combines. The result of their intensive development program was the Cockshutt "30" - the first tractor equipped with live power take-off and a live hydraulic system. The first "30" was produced in Brantford, Ontario, with production increasing from 400 uits in 1946 to over 17,000 in 1949. Production ceased in 1956 and the company was sold to U.S. interests in 1962. This stamp drawing featuring a farm tractor shows a standard-tread Cockshutt "30", equipped with wheel weights. Similar models are owned by collectors and museums such as the Ontario Agriculture Museum in Milton.

Robert Ellefson wrote on Friday, September 10, 1999 (PDT):I grew up on a dairy farm in northern Wisconsin (Ridgeland) and used Cockshutt tractors in the 50's and 60's. We had a COOP E-3 narrow front which when locally repainted was converted to the Cockshutt 30 colors and decals. We also bought a 1954 Cockshutt 30 with an adjustable wide front for row crop work. The standard wide front in your picture was too low to the ground to cultivate corn or beans but was good to stabilize the front end. The best feature of the tractor was the live power takeoff. It was the tractor of choice locally for running anything with a power takeoff. The tractor also had a good balance of power to weight so it's traction was remarkable. In the hills of Wisconsin the wide fron was necessary. My Father tipped over the narrow front in a sidehill with a front end loader raised. No doubt having the loader raised caused the tipping but it also made a "roll bar" which protected him; he escaped with minor bruises. WE sold the narrow front within a month. Cockshutt also made some follow on tractors; The 540 low boy; The 550 Standard (50 HP)which we had for many years in the 60's and the 560 diesel (60 HP) and there was a 570 Diesel for larger farms. These tractors were all cream colored with white logo panels. Their style was used by Oliver for their 1650, 1750 and 1850 models which weree of course green. There seems to be a lot of collectors of the 30's and 40 Cockshutts. The 550, 560, and 570 were similar workhorses that had many advanced features which John Deere and others eventually copied. I guess the Cockshutt is the SAAB of the tractor world. As a proud owner of many SAABs with their quirky but advanced engineering features, I appreciate in retrospect the advantages of Cockshutt tractors in their heyday.

ERIC DALSHAUG wrote on Friday, June 25, 1999 (PDT):I,m now a prode owner of a Model 30 Cockshutt. My uncle had a small Farm in Sask Canada, which he had Farmed from 1904 to 1982. From what Ive been, told he bought it used in the 60's. This was one of his very best Tractors he had owned. MY uncle died in the 80's and left me the Tractor. I just completed a 3500 mile journey to retrieve it and how the OLD Cockshutt has a new home in California. I will be using it on my Ranch.
Chuck wrote on Friday, May 28, 1999 (PDT):We have restored a Cockshutt #30 and it turned out very well. They are a beautiful tractor. However, ours has a Schwartz wide front on it and give a complete different appearance that the Cockshutt wide front. This one also has the live power and live PTO.

He worked it everyday almost until he passed away two years ago. The tractor, still working was sold off with the remainder of his assets, which included a 61 0r 62 Massey Ferguson.
