Bill Bush wrote on Monday, May 26, 2008 (PDT):I purchased a 70 industrial at an auction in St. Mary,MO. on Nov.3rd 2007. The one thing that really sets it apart is the engine which is a Continental 6 cylinder flathead of 209 c.i.displacement. Anyone out there know any history behind these engines being put in Olivers I ve had a hard time finding out much, partly maybe mostly, because of the loss of a lot of records in the May 1966 tornado that hit Charles City, Iowa. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

dana wrote on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 (PST):Doss, I have restored 5 70,s. Check the sector in side the steering box. When you turn the steering wheel see if the shaft goes up and down if it moves you may have to take it out to see if the worm gear is screwed into the grar box. I am sure you will see what is wrong when you get it apart. More gears on front end to check, plus pitman arm spring loaded both ends with BIG set screws on both. dana (908)6899001

The steering is very loose in the streering box. It appears this is not a replacable part. I have tried to tighten the large screw but to no avail. What next?

I have started restoration on it. I am taking pictures as I go that I will share if any one is interested. Lou Roscoe wrote on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 (PST):I have undertaken the restoration of a much abused Oliver Industrial 70. The engine has had the head rebuilt and now I need to locate an engine rebuild kit or individual parts (bearings, gaskets etc.) for the three gear continental six cylinder engine. If a rebuild kit is not available my next best option is to locate a set of main bearings (I have had the crank turned so I need an oversize set). I can get standard size piston rings and pin bushings if I have necessary.

This tractor is a power house at 70 horsepower. its part of are A team line here at the farm;Its paired with some of the best trctors ever built for the smaller acerage famrer. These tractors are the oliver of course and a 1954 aliss chalmers WD. A 1942 farmall "A". and the baby the 1954 Cub. These are all in working condition and are still used to farm with along with our old haying equipment

I like standards from any brand but like the Oliver the best. What would these tractors run in price for something that looks pretty good and runs decent? Hate to think I'm in $6000 area was hoping for $2500 area give or take a few hundred.

I am 53 now, a university professor who took over the family farm when my dad died 4 years ago. Ours runs like a top. We used it in the haying this summer. It is a 6-cyl. engine, said to be an experimental high- compression engine. The "70" is said to come from 70 octane gas, which it used in the 40's. Ours was purchased in 1947 and it did all the farm work until 1964 when we added a Ford 4000 (which we also still have). We now use a New Holland TN75 for the major work on our farm in Southwestern VA. We used it to run a thrashing machine (a Frick model). The thing was a real powerhorse under the belt. I still have its 2-bottom plow, an Oliver Plowmaster (2, 16" plows). It leaks a little oil around the engine seals. I guess the seals have dry rotted. Otherwise, it's in tip-top condition. I've seen restored models of these run up to $6000. But they were really nicely fixed up.

Willis Ayotte wrote on Tuesday, August 29, 2000 (PDT):I drove a 1940 Oliver Cockshutt 70 many miles. It still rins like a clock. It is still on the farm in Saskatchewan in a shed. My father baught it in 1940 for $1240.00 with starter lights and six speed trans.corner breaks and rubber tires. It has 201 six silnder motor operates at 1500 revs and1610 no load. Still have operators mamual for it.my nephue claims it now.It did tons of work till 1960. Would still do a ful day of work.
