We also had the Oliver cultivator that were easy to attach and use. No electric start had to crank it. During the war years I spent many hours on it..we could run against the Allis Chalmers, John Deere s and Farmall s, my only complaint was the steel wheels gave a pretty rough ride at times and limited your use of black top and oil roads. I have a F20 that has been in a shed these past 20 years. at one time, my father cranked it every week or so and it purred real good. My cousin, thought that it didn t have antifreeze and drained it one night without telling my dad. Then dad comes along and cranks it and let it run until the valves froze in it. Turming the crank is easy and no compression. Did it harm the piston and rings or can I just take off the head and regrind the valves. My first tractor was a Super MD. The dealer unloaded it and left the operators manual on the kitchen table. Dad didnt know a thing about it, so I sat down and read the manual for a bit, the went out to try it. I will never forget pushing the lever to the gas side, starting it up, and letting it run a bit. When I pulled the lever back and heard the unmistakable crack of that Diesel take off, I was in love! I loved that tractor, it did a good job on a 4 row front mount #461 cultivator, or a 4 14s 370 plow. I used it for almost everything I had to do. We had a M5 Moline gas that was a slug compared to my Farmall. I could outwork the Moline and use less fuel, and had that distinct crack of the diesel to listen to. And smoke! The governer would kick in and the stack poured out thick black smoke. Made the neighbor kids jealous. I had a DIESEL!

Help! My Massey Harris model #81S built in 1946 needs some help. I have used Hercules to plow the snow from my 600 foot driveway for the last ten years with no problems except he doesn t like to start when it s double digits below zero, censius . Yesterday he tried to start on the first turn over but sputtered to a stop. When I tried a second time, the starting motor made that whirring sound but would not engage. I gently rocked the engine back and forth while in neutral using a cooling fan blade and tried again with no luck. I have tried to remove the starting motor however, something inside the bell housing seems to be stopping me from removing the starter so that I can examine it more closely. My mechanic warned me to be careful or I could end up with a real mess. Any suggestions would be appreciated; there s a big snow storm coming on Thursday. Oh, we are way up here in Northern Ontario, Canada. Bill McKenna

I have a 1956 Massey Harris model 444 tractor. For the live PTO clutch I need the 12 springs called spring, pressure . These springs are a coil spring about 1 and 1/4 inches high and about an inch in diameter. The part number I have is 1005518M1. The 444 Massey Harris makes a live PTO by putting a clutch on the right axle going to the right rear wheel. The clutch is located out side the transmission/differential housing, under the floor board on the right side of the tractor behind the brake pedals. The tractor is a ZB or ZA_Model-Special it was made the last year of Z production in 1955-56 If my memory is correct. It had everything you could want, Power stearing heaver brakes, everything but a 3 point hitch. Minneapolis Moline changed models that next year and introduced the 335 445 which was an all new tractor with an all new Hydralic system with a draft sinceing 3 point hitch, made by Cesna aircraft. Both of the new tractors had a different feel, like driving a Ford tractor. I rember that their was a change of ownership,or management at this time in the Company. My father was a MM dealer from 1938 to 1976. I was 10 when the new models came out I rember the company gave away motor bikes and sewing machines with a new tractor.

About a year ago i bought a oliver 70 row crop and it needed a motor, cause it was locked up from sitting.So i bought another oliver 70 from a guy, and i figured i could take two and make one then restore it later, but the guy got me on that deal and when i got it home after a 200 mile round trip it was seized to. As i worked on that on i found a running restored one 5 miles away for 500 and it came with a half a 60 row crop cut right in half. And just yesterday i found my first whole running oliver 60 that i am hoping to get.They are great running tractors and they are TOUGH i love em. The farmer that owend this tractor wrote on the side loose, last ran 3 years ago, shes a bit rough, she runs like a top! Loren; Look on the base of the steering column, next to the radiator...the serial number should be on the cast iron steering housing. 1948 numbers are from 11348 to 57830 49 stsarted with 57831 to 99535. Hope this helps. Jim B.

I grew up in western Colo. on a ranch on Bone Mesa, Delta. We had two Ms, one a 47 and the other a 51 or 52. Also had an LA Case, VA Case and a 49 0r 50 Ferguson. Later, we bought an MTA 400. We put up 1250 to 1400 tons of alfalfa and grass hay every year as well as 30 acres of corn silage, 20 acres of oats also. In our spare time, we did custom haying with swathers and a 55T International Baler behind one the Ms. That probably accounted for another 3 to 5 thousand tons of additionally although we did not pick up and haul their hay. We all have hundreds of hours on those Ms and they never failed to start and run whether it was -25 or plus 99 degrees. We pulled plows, discs, harrows, balers-ran hay grinders, cornchoppers, you nameit.

I can get the tractor started but there seems to be no power when I attempt to throtle up. I have a 55 Cub as well and it appears that I can throtle up the 55. I am wondering if something has come apart in the governor on the 57. Anyone have a words of wisdom I would like to get the 57 running again. My wife and I own about 6 acres. I just finished restoring my 1954 G serial# g28611.My father bought his first one in 1948 along with plow,corn planter,cultivator,snow plow,furrow bar.He traded it ih 1954 for a new one with hydraulic lift and a set of 3 gang mowers which sat underneath. We replaced ignition system,clutch,pressure plate.brakes,oil seals on transmison and put on new paint and decales.I ll have to say it really looks and runs good. It s me again. Some of you s have wrote and said you were having starting problems and loss of power on grades. My father had this problem and it wasn t the gas lines or sediment bowel deal. to answer the june 22 question. diff between f 20 and f 30 is 10 hp and about 500 lbs. as far as physical, the f 30 is maybe 6 inches taller and 4 inches wider at the hood. very obvius if the 2 are side by side. other than that, you can get casting #s off left side engine block , drop housing, front steer gear housing, etc and they will all lead you to which one you have, good luck.

Dating the MH . Look under the tractor, just forward of the transmission housing on most you will find a date in the casting. That is the date that casting was made.As a general rule the tractor was built one year later .This date was omitted in later models , probably 1954/ 55. also the later MHF models 333-444 did not have it. also there is a book MASSEY FERGUSON TRACTORS by MICHAEL WILLIAMS -ISBN 0 71371898 6- THAT HAS EVERY SERIAL NO OF EVERY TRACTOR BUILT , BY MODEL AND YEAR This book is out of print but there may be some around . check the internet. this book was first printed in 1987 in england by blanford press.

I recently purchased a 1953 Farmall model F-Cub the tractor is in good condition and I am wanting to restore the paint to the original color on the tractor and its equipment. Currently the tractor is red with the aluminum color trim on back wheel and the equipment is rusty. Can you advise me on paint colors and where I could purchase them I noticed that tractor supply has some Farmall colors but wasn t for sure if that would be the correct colors to use on this tractor. My twin brother has a super A farmall, 1954. We were raised on a tobacco farm and we raised peanuts and corn also. I had 2 brothers that had to do a lot of cultivating. I am trying to find something with several pictures of farmall tractors on it,older model ones to give to my brother for Christmas. He has things like that hanging in his shop, although our parents have passed on and none of us farm now but if any of us would have farmed,it would have been him. He has several tractors and has never farmed since he got out on his own. In our area you have to be a huge farmer to make a go of it. It is nothing like it was when we were growing up. It s a shame that some things have to change. Anyway,he is a big fan of farmall tractors and has caused me to have an appreciation for them as well.

I started out with a John Deere 41 L frame I bought on ebay. It came with front axle and wheels, tires were shot rear end and trans entact, steering,and propeller shaft with clutch housing. No sheet metal, engine, seatframesupport, and other parts. It had a tag! serial number 634725. I got it home and over the next 2 years I have been busy on ebay. I have used parts and NOS parts. Some are expensive, like the fiber discs. I m still in need of one rear wheel rim. I managed to get a hub for one. and a set of 22 tires and tubes. I have three engines to use. 1 Hercules, 2JD LUC. I ve had fun so far. One piece at a time. I also have a 34 A John Deere.

To Wade Combs, by the serial number list on the site here, it is likely a 1948 Super A. The numbers they list are from the 250s to 268. I am considering buying and restoring a 1947 Super A to cultivate the garden I am clearing out. I have a 140 with a fast hitch for the plowing and other work.

Dad owned a W-30 and two F-20s. He traded the W-30 in on a Super M around 1962 or so. One F-20 had the corn picker permanently mounted as it was a royal pain to put on, take off and store. The second F-20 was used for planting, mowing and cultivating. As a teen, the old F-20s were embarrassing. I d give my eye teeth for Dad s old tractors now. When he sold the farm, he sold the better of the two it had a road gear transfer case mounted between engine and trannie to a neighbor with the sickle mower. The one with the picker was left with the farm. What a waste!

I recently aquired a very old Farmall tractor. I believe it is a super A. I can read the serial number as 264227 but the Model number is unreadable. I would like to try and restore it but I have to find out what year and model it is. I have seen several pictures on the net that look very simular but not exactly the same. It is possible between the years of 1946 to 1948. If anyone can give me some assistance in this and how to get more info for the restoring of it.

I have a 1953 Case VA. I looks exactly like the fire orange colored on pictured at the top of this form. It is a general purpose agricultural tractor. The following is what I understand the colors and model numbers to be -- I see that Mark wrote on Apr 29, 2000, that he had purchased a Case VAI and it was all yellow with no parts resembling red. Mark, It is supposed to be yellow . the VA I means industrial and industrial is yellow. I see a VAI for sale at Bonney Lake, WA, currently on craigslist and it is yellow, but advertised as a VAC. The VAC is fire orange . None of these are like Jon Arms rare VAIW. I also see Denny wrote on Jan 4, 2006, that he has a 1955 VAI. I believe all VA series ended in 1954. The serial numbers of all VA series indicated a year following the actual manufacture date, therefore Denny may be thinking it is 1955 because of the S/N.

Which one would be the best to use and which one would have the best value Both tractors look the same except for the transmissions. It looks like they both have the same engine and front end.
