Antique Allis Chalmers Tractor: AC D17

This picture is a 1959 version, with a 226ci gasoline engine rated at 54 HP. The D17 was one of AC's most popular tractors and was built from 1958 until 1967. It featured a power director hand clutch, power adjustable rear wheels, traction booster system and diesel or LP gas optional engines. Picture contributed by Rick Nikolich.

  • we have 3 D17 s 2 series IV with live low pressure high volume hydraulics we have owned the Series III since new and it has around over 7000 hours on it and one of the Series IV s has 9,700 hours on it and is used every year to run augers and other odd jobs and we recently purchased another series IV but the Tac was stuck so the hours are unknown... needless to say the engines last a very long time. If it has been stuck for 7 years its anybody s guess but with proper care it would be a very good tractor

  • I truly enjoy reading through all of the comments, stories, and questions of all the A-C devoted owners. I too grew up on a farm within a family and extended family that had a fair share of various Orange Tractors. It is difficult to say which were my favorites. On our farm we had a really great D19. While the companion D17 is a great tractor in its own right and I loved the handling and manuverability of the D17, the extra power provided by the larger D19 really came in handy on our farm. I learned to drive tractors on the WC models one of which is 1941 model still owned by my brother. It is essentially as good as the day it was new.

  • I just brought home my first AC and I think I am going to like it, but have a problem. The Powerstearing does not work well, and I cannot find the SN in the place I was told it would be. Someone has added a IN 2002 loader on this tractor, it works fine. Oh, Ya, the 3point will not raise when you put a load on it.   • D17 hydraulics problems. This was my fathers tractor, he died 11 years ago of cancer. I finally got it back in the family, but it has problems, it sat for 5 years under a lean-two. Hydraulics are not lifting, please help. Checked hydraulic hose in pumpkin and o-rings in cylinder.Everything looks good. Why wouldn't any oil come out the back of the hydraulic line, going back to the rear hydraulic lift system? Screwed transport valve in, no lift. Screwed out, no lift. Loosened line on pressure side of transport valve, started engine no fluid came out the pressure side of line. Pulled relief valve apart and everything looks good. Left relief apart, started engine and no oil came out at all. Followed both hydraulic lines to the front, one was on the left side of the gastank and the other is on the right side. Disconnected both lines, blew air threw lines and were clear. Next, blew air into pressure side heard oil bubble on pressure side. Did the same to return side, same thing. Started engine with lines disconnected, no oil at all. Moved levers up and down still no oil. Also, power director lever is stuck in the forward position. PTo lever will not move. Will not engage. Is this a pump problem? We have the IT manual is that the best one?

I'm not sure when we got it but my late husban got our D 17 at a farm sale, I have sold it to my son-in-law and it is still being used on our farm, he has put some work on it like new fenders and some other repairs . we also still have a WD that we got new in 1953,that he is starting to restore, my husban used it just before he passed away in 1996, the rims went bad and has just been setting, we also have a 190, that he baught in the early 1970's still being used. I do quilting and wanting to make a quilt with AC tactors,that is the way I found our sight, looking for ideas, Do you know where I could find picures that I could use for this, we have had nothing but AC from back in 1953.

  • To T. Roger on your rough running 1960 D17. Mine runs rough also at times. Try using a good lead substitution additive and Marvel Mystery Oil to every tank of gas. If it smoothes out after a tank full continue using it until the next overhaul and replace with modern valves and guides. If this doesn’t affect it, then rebuild the centrifugal advance behind the points in the distributor housing and see if that doesn’t help a bit. Also I use a good multi-viscously oil while using the tractor on light loads. It seems to keep it a bit cleaner. Remember to change the oil to 30 wt summer and 20 wt winter if you have it in regular service. Hope this if of help.

  • I am looking to sell an Allis Chalmers D17. It has hydraulics already set up on it and has some kind of belly hanger for implements that I believe is hydraulicly controlled. It also comes with a box scraper. It was running very good until it stopped. I took off the head and found 1 scored cylinder insert and piston. It was not leaking any fluids before that and I would guess that it needs very few parts to get in good running condition. All the sheet metal is there and the tires are in very good shape 75% or better. I am asking $500 for everything if you are interested. It does need paint however as there is a of of oxidation and some rust. Please contact me if you are interested as I will sell it to the first taker. Richard

  • I grew up with a 1957 D17 and spent countless hours plowing, discing, cultivating, etc, etc....(Of course I had to learn to drive a tractor using a WC). And for a short time, worked on them at an implement dealer. Recently bought a D17 Series IV at an auction. It has the heavy 3-pt hitch, but it goes down rather quickly when engine is shut off. Anyone have an idea what might be the problem? Perhaps faulty check valve? Also, where would be a good place to find an additional "stack" valve to add to the valve bank to run a loader bucket. This tractor came with an Allis loader but has a trip bucket that I'd like to convert to hydraulic-cylinder controlled and perhaps make it self-leveling. Does the Series IV use the 821 Lube for hydraulics/power director? Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • A friend has a D-17 Series 4. It has a add-on hydralic spool valves with two control levers, is this an option avialable through A/C or is some farmer doing some "shade-tree mechanicing"?. We are not sure if it works as it isn't plumbed correctly. One of the pressure ports are hooked to the return side of the spool valves. Can someone tell me the correct place to hook up the return line from the spool valves to the hydralic resevoir. I am wondering about the hydralic specifications (p.s.i. and g.p.m.). The tractor is a later model of the series 4. We have been told it is rated at 60 hp.. If the hydralics can be made opperable is it possible to run a Hesston 14 foot hydroswing hay conditioner? Appericiate any comments concerning the hydralic system.

  • I started driving AC many years ago. I have used WD.WD45.D14.D17 (4) D19 7010. &B. You can do more work on less fuel with a 17 than any thing else made. I use mine for discing,sowing hauling everything,mowing and even baling. As to the problem of creeping with the hand clutch in nuetral,(they all do this), try a novel solution; either use the brakes, or idle all the way down and turn the front wheels full. This works on mine. As to the gentleman who inquired about the 17 stuck in gear; We had a 19 that did this and we had to pull the trans cover off and align the shifter forks and move the gears to nuetral. Hope these tips help

  • I grew up on a farm. Never could afford the "green line" of tractors and my relative was an A-C dealer. We had a WD45, D17, 170, 180, D19, 190, and a 200. All were gas except the 200. I began driving the WD45 on a baler when I was 7 yrs. old and admit the hand clutch was great for "feathering" into hay lumps in windrows to keep the baler from shearing a pin. I still have the 170. It has an A-C 500 series loader on it. It was the most useful tractor on our farm. It has only about 3000 hrs. on it and has been shedded all the time. Really liked the 190 but it had more power than the rear end could handle. A weak spot. The 200 was better in that regard. We had A-C cultivators, A-C plows, an old 60 combine with a Wisconsin V-4 engine, an A-C digger, and an A-C disk. Very few A-C (Agco-Allis now) dealers still left around here. I'll always have a soft spot for those orange tractors even now. Nice to see so many of you out there who have one or like them. The 226 cu. in. 4 cylinder put out a lot of power. Only bad thing about all of the older models was that the poor operator sat down in the dirt when it was dusty/windy. If I could find a nice D14 or D15 I'd buy it as the C that we have a Woods 72" belly mower on is getting a bit touchy to start (6 volt). Sorry I rambled on.

It looked very rough when I bought it, but I knew inside it was a gem. I completely restored it and to this day it is the best tractor I have ever owned. I use it for mowing, snowplowing and general use. I wouldn't mind restoring any "D" series Allis's.

If I'm pulling a bush-hog or a small disc. It seems that if i'm on completely level ground it does better but it not the 3-pt hitch will raise up. When i'm using a disc, it will not go it the ground only 1-2 inches, even in soft ground. Can anyone explain to me what the problem might be?

  • Vermeer has a required horse power table for their balers on their web site, but the 506 must be an obsolete model. Your best bet is to contact a dealer. If your D17 is an older series it has a high pressure low volume hydraulic system that won't be compatible with your baler. If you want to use an older D17 with modern low pressure high volume hydraulic implements like; loaders, balers, etc.... It is common to add an auxilary pump and spool valve to handle equipment that requires low pressure high volume. Good Luck!!

  • I bought a D-19 and am just wondering if there is anyone out there who has ever owned one could tell me any special characteristics of the 19. I have experienced the partial engagement of the hi-lo lever and I am glad to know that this is normal in the D series. I did discover that the O-rings on the power iverler lever shaft can be replaced without breaking the tractor apart if you happen to have a fluid leak around the diverter lever shaft. Be careful not to slide the shaft too far either direction when changing the O rings or the half moon key maight fall out and into the bottom of the housing. It can be reached by taking the cover off the right side of the housing, but it added about 3 hours to my original 30 minute job, but it could have been a lot worse.

  • Alot of factors are used to determine value; sheetmetal, tires,wf,power steering,year,electrical system,rim cond.,gauges, etc....The good 3pt conversions go for about $400 and they are worth it if you plan on using it alot. An early model D17 in good all around shape will bring around $2800 in the mid west. If it's in rough shape and has a bad engine or trans. I wouldn't go over $500. Good Luck!

  • When the power director clutch is in the neutral position the transmission oil between the clutch discs causes just enough drag to make the tractor want to move. In cold weather the fluid is even thicker and will make this even more noticeable. This is normal for D-series tractors, so be sure to shift the gear selector into neutral before dismounting the tractor.
